USA Basketball 2014 Thread (Final Cut P.27)

Post#1 » by kulaz3000 » Tue Jul 29, 2014 4:58 am

I thought with all the USA topic discussions behind hidden being all the excitement of Derrick Rose returning to action, I'd create a thread dedicated to strictly to USA basketball which of course will still include the occasional Derrick Rose news which involves him being on the team.

Lets try not to derail this thread simply with Derrick Rose talk, and use this to continue to update everyone on USA basketball team news in general. So with that being said:

Here are the lineups we saw…
1. Kyrie Irving, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Kenneth Faried and DeMarcus Cousins
2. John Wall, Curry, Gordon Hayward, Faried and Cousins
3. Rose, James Harden, Paul George, Kevin Durant and Anthony Davis
4. Damian Lillard, DeMar DeRozan, Kyle Korver, Durant and Andre Drummond
5. Irving, Bradley Beal, Thompson, Chandler Parsons and Paul Millsap
6. Lillard, Harden, George, Durant and Drummond
7. Wall, Curry, Hayward, Faried and Cousins

No. 3 above could certainly be a starting lineup when the U.S. plays its first exhibition game against Brazil on Aug. 16 or when it opens the World Cup against Finland two weeks later. It features four guys with National Team experience and George, who’s the obvious pick to start alongside Durant at the other forward spot (the Andre Iguodala role from 2010).

We only saw Curry playing the two, alongside either Irving or Wall. But afterward, he said he doesn’t see himself strictly as a two with this team. “I play both,” he said. “I’m obviously better equipped [than the others] to play the two, but I can push in transition and initiate the offense if I need to. I got to be able to do both and guard both positions as well.”

In a few lineups, we saw Faried and Cousins playing together. And yes, they controlled the glass.

Drummond still looks raw. He missed a couple of short jump hooks pretty badly.

This is my expected starting line-up. Saw them on the floor together the majority of the practice.

Rose/Curry/Lillard
Harden/Klay
PG/Beal
Durant/Millsap
Brow/Boogie/Drummond

would be my picks. Would've liked to have picked Hot Sauce, but we are paper thin up front. I fear Coach K is going to go too small and some big physical team is going to beat us up on the boards. Especially Spain.

This team could make really good use of Taj actually.

I'm expecting the starting lineup to be Rose/Harden/PG/Durant/Davis.

I they'll take Boogie as the main big man off the bench, and then fill out the roster with Curry, Wall or LIllard, Klay, Beal, Parsons, and one more big (Millsap or Faried). That makes the depth chart something like:

Rose/Wall
Harden/Curry/Beal
George/Thompson
Durant/Parsons/Millsap
Davis/Cousins

Coach K likes to have a stretch 4 in there most of the time, so I think he'd favor Millsap. That lineup would probably require a decent amount of minutes from Durant and Davis, but I think everyone else would play only in spurts, with lots of quick substitutions to ensure everyone plays at full speed.

Some Random Observations:

*Rose seems to be "back". (One step a time, I know)
*Harden seems to be fat.
*Love pussy-ed out of the deal so he wouldn't have to face answering to the media barrage about his trade status.
*I lapse into daydreams of Anthony Davis with the Bulls at least a couple of times a day now.

Does anyone know how Doug did in scrimmage yesterday? Or did he not get much play time?

I heard a quote from Doug saying that before he left with the tweak, that he felt that he had been playing well.

Chicago Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau ran a majority of the first practice on one court. It started out with a lot of walk-throughs and some specific plays but it didn’t take long to get the group starting to resemble teammates.

“It’s not going to happen in one day,” Thibodeau said, “but when you have the type of talent that we do, if you get them committed to playing basketball on both sides as a five-man group that’s your best chance for success.”

The National Team went 2-0 in a pair of 12-minute scrimmages against the Select Team, although both were close and each required a comeback. In the final scrimmage, the teams were split up more evenly for one 10-minute game. The result was an exciting back-and-forth affair that went down to the wire. The Blue Team, featuring Durant, James Harden and Paul George, among others, held on for a three-point victory.

It was only one day — and an admittedly light one at that — but the highlights are already piling up. From Andre Drummond’s rejection at the rim to Kyrie Irving’s drive with a finesse finish, the competition figures to only pick up from here.

There’s a lot for the coaching staff to figure out as training camp pushes forward. One thing they know for sure, though, is that they have plenty of options.

“We have great versatility,” Thibodeau said. “We’ll find our style.”

Glad Rose is looking good. Hopefully McD is playing well, too.

I think we got lucky last time with the whole starting Odom at center thing. Spain's bigs are legit (Gasol, Gasol, Ibaka), if we trot Durant or George out to guard these guys they're going to get abused.
