Alburquerque, 24, has been a high-strikeout (9.7 per nine innings) and high-walk (4.7) pitcher at Double-A and has not pitched above that level in the Chicago Cubs and Colorado Rockies' organizations.

He was 2-4 with a 4.98 ERA and three saves last year for Colorado's farm club in Tulsa.

Alburquerque is pitching with Aguilas in the Dominican Winter League and has a 1.26 ERA with 16 strikeouts in 14 1/3 innings over nine games.

Meanwhile, the Tigers announced they purchased the contracts of left-handed pitcher Charlie Furbush and shortstop Cale Iorg from Triple-A Toledo and right-handed pitchers Lester Oliveros, Jose Ortega and Brayan Villarreal and left-handed pitcher Duane Below from Double-A Erie. Left-handed reliever Fu-Te Ni was sent outright to Toledo and removed from the 40-man roster.

Dombrowski said he feared losing Iorg, a top prospect who faltered before showing offensive improvement late last season, in the upcoming Rule 5 draft if he had not been on the 40-man roster. That roster limit was been reached with those transactions.

I hope the tigers pick a player of the rule -5 draft, i am sure their is someone out their that could help the tigers maybe a catcher?

Low risk, high reward type of signing. IMO, this is how you fill out a bullpen. It's all about trying to catch lightning in a bottle, getting a good reliever is really a crapshoot.
