DETROIT – After another baseball season that failed to result in a World Series title, changes were inevitable for the Detroit Tigers.

The first shoe dropped with Jim Leyland resigning as manager and a younger Brad Ausmus was hired to replace him. However, the most surprising move came Wednesday night with slugging first baseman Prince Fielder being traded to Texas for second baseman Ian Kinsler.

With everyone weighing on what has turned out to be the biggest offseason transaction, here are five things Tigers fans should consider about the Fielder-Kinsler deal.

Detroit ultimately saved $76 million

By sending the remainder of Fielder’s contract, which is worth $168 million, the Tigers opened up some much-needed money in the hopes of resigning Max Scherzer and Miguel Cabrera. Detroit also sent $30 million in cash to the Rangers as part of the deal, while taking responsibility for Kinsler’s $62 million contract in return.

“We have been trying to create some financial flexibility,” Detroit general manager/president Dave Dombrowski said in a conference call. “We’re in a situation where we have a lot of stars. They’re well-paid stars, and you can only have so many of those.”
