2012 Cavs Offseason Thread

Postby Harper4Ferry? on Sat Apr 28, 2012 2:50 pm

We have a Lottery pick likely to be either 4th or 5th overall. We own the 24th pick in the draft. We also have two early 2nd rounders.

So what do you guys want to accomplish this offseason?

We go into this offseason with the following positions set for next year
PG-Kyrie
PF-Thompson(by virtue of draft position)
C-Andy

Bench Players with 2012 salaries
SF Luke Walton
SF Omri Casspi
PF Samardo Samuels

Team Options
PG Boobie Gibson(unsure about the guarantee on his salary) I hope to god that he doesn't come back.

Restricted Free Agents-
SF Alonzo Gee
C Erden
PF Harangody

I'd imagine that we should probably bring Gee back at a reasonable cost. Something like 3 @ 3M. I don't know how much more than that I would personally want to pay. I don't think he's a starter in this league, but he could serve to be a pretty good player off the bench. The case against him would be that you could use Casspi as a backup swingman if he gets too expensive. It's also possible Casspi could be gone. I doubt we bring back either of the big guys, but its possible we could offer them minimum salaries and let them earn a spot on the roster.

Assuming that the early first round pick will be a starter is pretty likely. If it's either Davis, Drummond or Robinson, that means you're still going to be short 2 starters. If it's one of the guards(Beal or MKG), you still need another swingman.
Between 24 and the 2 2nd rounders, I'd imagine that we can finagle at least one rotation player from the start. I'd like to see some sort of combo guard that can backup Kyrie, and another big guy that could add to our front court depth.

We have about 20million available to spend on Free Agents. I'd imagine that everyone will be all over Eric Gordon, and with money being similar, nobody would willingly want to go to Cleveland.

So who are some of the FA targets to bring in? I like a guy like Landry Fields, but I'm not sure that he can score enough to be a shooting guard and primary scoring option. He'd be a great player to have, but only in the right situations. He's shaping up to be a very durable guy as well.

What does everyone else want to see?

i would be happy if we try to get terrence williams. i think he is a talented young athletic swingman who can pass the ball. he wouldn`t be expensive so why not try to get him?

Resign Gee. Win the lotto. Take Davis. Trade up. Take Harkless.

Irving
Gee
Harkless
Davis
Varajao

With Thompson as 6th man.

Ideally I would like to see MKG and doron Lamb with the 2 firsts. Then maybe a project big like Sacre with one of the seconds. It wouldnt surprise me if one of the 2nds is packaged with the Lakers pick to move up some.
This would still leave us short at the C position, so I wouldnt mind throwing some of that money at Spencer Hawes. I think Boobie will be back, but he cant be counted on to stay healthy or be consistent for that matter, but if we draft D Lamb he can swing between guard spots so it doesnt matter if Boobie is back or not. Gee should definitely be back as should Samardo, though I dont think Scott is too high on him after this season.
Erden has sucked for the most part and Harangody is a 12th or 13th man at best. Walton is garbage but with his salary I think he will stay, and possibly be used as an expiring in a deal near the deadline, possibly for more picks and a contract that a team is looking to unload. It sounds like Casspi will be back, but I am not much higher on him than I am Harangody.
I have not read up on who will be available in FA this offseason, so for now I cant say who else I would be interested in, but with the above in mind the roster would look something like this:

PG......Kyrie/Boobie
SG......D Lamb (draft)/Gee (not sure who would start)
SF......MKG (draft)/Casspi
PF......Thompson/Samuels
C.......Andy/Hawes (FA)/Sacre (draft or other project big if not Sacre)

With Andy being able to play both big positions, and with Gee starting it would allow Lamb to back up both guard positions there would be some flexibility for coach Scott to work with. That is 11 players, and Walton would probably take up one spot so it would leave 3 positions open for some of the guys with non-guaranteed contracts that we have, if someone surprises in the summer league a spot would be available for that player. We would still be a little weak at the 2 and 3 positions due to there being 2 rookies and 1 borderline rotation player (Casspi) there, but by seasons end I think this team could be playing well enough to be close to the eighth position in the East, providing they stay reasonably healthy.

I'd like to see Varajao traded. We should focus on thr Raptors since they love Euros.

Aside from that, assuming a top 4 pick, I'd love

1) MKG or Beal
2) Doran Lamb with the Lakers pick
3) BPA with 2nd rounders
4) Sign Hibbert
5) miss playoffs again, get a top ten SG next year

I know both scenarios are far fetched, but Cleveland (the town) is definately owed some sports karma

what about the scenario where we draft drummond and trade up with the lakers and our 2nd round pick to somehow get perry jones

i think the perfect circumstances would be given to jones to develop because most of the pressure would be on irving and drummond

would be a BIG and defensive minded frontcourt with jones at the 3, thompson at 4 and drummond at 5 with andy beeing put in his most fitting role as a 6th man, if we dont trade him!

Ideally, my goal would be this:

Win the lottery, take Davis number 1.
Trade 24 and 33 to move to 17 to take Terrence Ross.
With 34 draft Festus Ezeli.

Re-sign Alonzo Gee for 4 yrs, 13 million.
Pick-up the option for Donald Sloan for 1 year at minimum.
Offer Chase Budinger 3 years, 16 million.
Offer Omer Asik 4 yrs, 22 million.

Invite David Lighty to camp, add him to Summer League squad.

Line-up:
PG- Irving, Sloan
SG- Ross, Gee, Lighty
SF- Budinger, Casspi, Walton
PF- Davis, Thompson, Samuels
C- Varejao, Asik, Ezeli

I like about half of this, Davis of course, Ross would be a good pick up, and Ezeli would be a good risk in the 2nd. However, I am not a fan of Budinger, he is an athlete not really a basketball player imo. That trio of Sf's would be horrible, but getting Davis would be fantastic so if all this happened I would still be very happy with this.

Wow, 2 of the highest risk/reward players in the draft with Drummond and PJ3. I dont think Grant has the stones to go with both of those guys, maybe one but not both. The front court offense would be horrible, so we would have to hold the opps to about 75 or 80 a game to win consistently with that group.

Hypothetical question. If we end up with the 5th pick and Beal/Davis/MKG/Robinson are all gone, and David Kahn is on the phone offering Derrick Williams for the draft rights to Andre Drummond.....Does anyone do that? I find it impossible that Williams will shoot so poorly from 3 again. I'd probably do it, but I wonder what other people think.

Draft MKG, Beal, or Barnes with our 1st round pick. Draft a PF or C with the Lakers 1st round pick. Prior to doing so, look to see if we can move up from the 24th pick using our 2nd round picks, and/or the ability to take on salary. Either way, simply go for the BPA with the Lakers pick. Make an offer to Spencer Hawes, also make an offer to Courtney Lee. Potential 2012-13 depth chart:

Irving/Sloan
Lee/Harris
MKG/Gee/Casspi
Thompson/LA pick
Hawes/Varejao
Well at least we're not Detroit!

I'd much rather have Barnes than Williams.... Williams is a tweener and a bust.

I can't believe that Barnes is considered any more of a sure thing than Williams. I think Williams is still a pretty sure thing, despite his shooting woes from 3. He has no future in minnesota with Kevin Love. But he could easily push Thompson to the bench.

Defensively he's atrocious...and he also can't create his own shot.
