Still looking to be in good position with that pick though. :)

Still doesn't change the fact that you were wrong. I'm not sure why you'd be gloating

From their point of view it is not protected at all since Phoenix will get the pick if it is in the lottery.

I'm pretty sure I saw Amico on twitter say it isn't protected. Like I said before to someone who couldn't grasp the situation, conflicting reports.

This confuses me,

Phoenix receives the Lakers' 2013 first-round pick (least favorable of picks sent to them for theirs from Cleveland) (Steve Nash trade 07-11-12)

To me this means that the Cavs still have first choice as to whether they want to switch picks with the Lakers. Phoenix gets whatever is left.

Am I interpreting this correctly?

However the choice is extinguished if it is lottery

Cavs have the right to swap first rounders with Lakers (their own, the Heats and the Kings). If Lakers 2013 first rounder is in lottery, pick is extinguished. (LeBron James trade 07-09-10)

Not sure how accurate this is but I got it form NBADraft.Net

The Suns get a pick from the Lakers. If it's not a lottery pick, it's the worse pick(closest to the end of the round) of the Lakers/Kings/Heat. If it's a lottery pick, the Suns get it.

Why are we still discussing this?

The Suns own the Lakers pick.

The only way the Suns can't get it is if the Lakers make the playoffs because the Lakers owe the Cavs a protected pick.

In that case the Cavs have priority over the lottery protected pick. If the Lakers are in the lottery however the Suns will get the Lakers pick.

That is why it is confusing.

As a Suns fan I had been searching for a long time on what kind of protection was on the pick. Thanks for clearing that up.

This is actually the correct information, the pick is Top 14 protected. Basically if Lakers end up lotto bound, the Suns possess the pick.

Here's a link with excellent information on how it breaks down.....

Are we sure there is protection on the pick? absorbing Walton's contract seems like a high price to pay for the right to swap a protected pick.

The Lakers should just remove the restriction on the pick they owe us. I'm sure they would rather give a EC team a lotto pick than a WC team, and I don't think they make the playoffs.

LOL, rooting for Kobe to stay healthy. Kobe keeps them competitive but he also seems to often be the reason that they lose. Much like early Jordan or even LeBron in early years. Superstars really should make sure they get other people off before they do it themselves.

It appears that the lakers have probably bottomed out, and are 15-15.

With 52 games left, I see the possibilities as the following:

Lakers go 26-26 to finish...they really are a .500 team. We don't get the pick cause they miss the playoffs.

Lakers go 31-21. and continue the .600 basketball they've played the last few weeks. At 46-36 they are a borderline playoff team. If they get in with that record they send back pick 18-20

Lakers go 34-18(.650), finish with 49 wins. Most likely are a playoff lock with that record, and send back pick 20-22

Lakers go 37-15(.700ish), finish with 52 wins and send back 22-24

Lakers get red hot, go 42-10(.800ish) and finish with 57 wins. This nabs us pick 25-27.

The obvious factor that kind of sucks is that the bottom 3-4 eastern conference playoff qualifiers will easily be worse than the West #8 seed, so pick 18 or 19 is the best case scenario if they make the playoffs.
