1B Options (Post-Gamel)

Postby Kerb Hohl on Wed May 02, 2012 4:25 pm

Let's list some creative ideas.

Probably not happening:
-Hart to 1B, use our extra corner OFs more or trade for a corner OF
-Ramirez to 1B, Green at 3B

Free Agents:
Lee
?

Trade:
LaRoche when Morse returns?
Carp?
LaHair? (Probably not)
Kila Ka'aihue
Buy low on Mark Reynolds

Ishikawa to play most days, Ramirez once a week, Conrad to 3rd on that day.

You could also move Hart to 1B and start Nori.

Are we sure we want our 1B spot to essentially be manned by 2 guys that project to a low-to-mid .700s OPS if you count Conrad there?

Not saying it's ideal. But I think one way or another we're going to lose power at a position you typically want a lot of.

There is no way I'd play Ishikawa every day. You need to either add someone, move Hart, or bring up Green and give him a try.

I'm not sure how available he'd be, but I'd really like to consider buying low on Mark Reynolds. Maybe I'm missing some details, but I'd give that some consideration.

I wonder if Trumbo would be at all available.

From the other thread:

Without confirming the move officially, manager Ron Roenicke and Melvin indicated utility infielder Brooks Conrad would be coming up from Class AAA Nashville. That would allow a platoon with left-handed hitting Travis Ishikawa but there also will be consideration about moving rightfielder Corey Hart to first base, a position he once played.

We could look at OF options as well. Obviously if Morgan can hit again, we have an extra productive OF in the rotation as it stands.

Don't really want him. Maybe he's turned the corner a bit this season at .345 early on (in matcup-specific play), but I have no interest in a .292 OBP in his career.

I guess he could be a respectable platoon with Ishikawa because I think he can hit lefties (EDIT: Not really much different). He's Carlos Gomez with better power at the plate.

I'd rather have Morales.

It was for one year (rookie season at that) he had the terrible OBP. The year before in AAA he carried a .368 OBP. Not as bad.

Would also make a call on Brandon Belt. They can't keep from dicking with him over in San Fran.

True, I had just looked up those AAA numbers as well. That season seems like his only promising OBP season in the minors, but maybe he was "getting it" and took his lumps in the majors last season.

He probably projects to a .330 OBP guy with 30-35 bombs in his prime. I guess I'd take it...but he'll probably regress a bit as this season goes by.

Too bad we didn't buy low and stash away Chris Davis last season. He's a similar agressive, power prospect (that's been up and down a lot the past few years after a breakout rookie campaign) that seems like he has put it together this season.

EDIT: Waits for twirly to come in and talk about how much of a hitter's haven the PCL is.

Davis has played well for Baltimore so far. I would call SF and try to get Huff or a vet like that. The price would be too high on Trumbo, Morales, or Belt.

I'd place a call on blocked Gamel-esque prospect in Clint Robinson of KC. He's blocked at the corners and DH for the forseeable future and is similar to Gamel: raking in AAA at an older age, probably won't be godly, but could hit the ball well. See: Brian LaHair so far for a ceiling.

The easiest choice is A-Ram to 1st, Green to 3rd. If I didn't think Nyjer's success last year was kind of a fluke, then it would Hart to first, Nyjer in rf, Aoki in cf.
