Update: Yoan Moncada Can Now Be Signed

Post#1 » by moocow007 » Fri Jan 23, 2015 2:19 pm

Well at least we know Cashman is interested now instead of assuming he is. Yankees held a private workout for Yoan Moncada, the 19 year old Cuban "phenom" middle infielder that most anticipate will shatter the record for money paid to an amateur player. The Yankees have done a great job signing international amateur players so far (having signed 10 of the top 30 international amateur players this offseason including one, Dermis Garcia, that is regarded by some scouts as a young ARod)...Moncada, if signed, is viewed as the cherry on top and would top off one spectacular amateur haul to restock their farm system.

For those that have been living under a rock, Moncada is viewed as a 5 tool player that would be drafted no.1 overall in most drafts and would instantly become a top 10 prospect in all of baseball (as a point of reference the Yankees current best prospect is not in the top 50). Expectation is that he will need to spend at least one year (maybe two) in the minors but should become a franchise cornerstone type player and a dynamic talent along the lines of Yasiel Puig.

So...let's hope we're gearing up for the Yanks introducing Moncada to the media in a month or two. Still no news on when he'll be allowed to sign with a MLB team but I believe the expectation is within a month or two.

They've spent so much on international guys this year, they'll be limited the next two off seasons to max offers of only 300k per player (ifa) which is why they need to finish off with Moncada as the cherry on top, break the bank Cash-man!

Something to the tune of in excess of $15 million when the max is $3 million. They signed 10 of the top 30 international amateur players. So yeah, I would say they are all in. Now $15 million isn't the $50-60 million it'll probably take to get Moncada under contract (and that's not including the tax they'd have to pay) but Moncada is being viewed as an immediate top 10 prospect in all of baseball that is almost major league ready. He plays a premium position and has 5 tools. They spent well beyond that for Tanaka who was similarly viewed last season. Yes, they should have signed Jorge Soler (who is absolutely monsterizing the minors) and they should have gone with Puig, Abreu, etc. But hopefully at some point the stigma and bad memories of Jose Contreras is lifted and they'll commit to a Cuban. Timing right now is perfect for that. They will be extremely limited in who they can sign for the next 2 years, they have just lost their SS from the last 2 decades, they have a guy that most believe is better or more upside than any of the existing Cuban players, a guy that has extreme marketability, a guy that a lot believe will be a future superstar. And all it will cost the Yankees is money. They don't have to trade any of their prospects. And they aren't signing a guy heading into the wrong side of 30.

Looks like Moncada has been cleared by the government (OFAC) so one step closer. Estimates now is that he'll be fully cleared to sign with a team in about 2 weeks. This will be well ahead of the June 2015 deadline that Yankees fans were fearing. So, yeah, in about 2 weeks is whether we see if Cashman has his big boy pants on or if he'll continue wearing a dress when it comes to signing Cuban players.

Never understand why Cashman is always late to the game. I mean, this guy is gun shy.

He's going to bring back this Cuban...

...Ronnie Mustelier.

To which...Mustelier actually looked pretty darn good his short time with the Yanks but Cashman still waived him, I believe with the justification that "they wanted to give other guys a chance". Maybe Cashman has something against Cubans in general? Maybe that's the problem. Heck there's even a term that is being used right now for anyone joining the Yanks that either isn't getting the playing time they seem to deserve or gets designated for assignment...it's called being "Mustelierred".

Yanks need to bring in some fresh blood. This constant signing high priced FA is ridiculous.
