Breaking news: Tanaka will be posted!

Post#1 » by VirginiaKnickFan » Tue Dec 24, 2013 11:53 pm

Some breaking baseball news this Christmas Eve.

Via the translating skills of the Los Angeles Times’ Dylan Hernandez, Sponichi in Japan is reporting that the Rakuten Golden Eagles have decided to go through with posting right-hander Masahiro Tanaka, allowing him to depart for Major League Baseball.

Rakuten had second thoughts about allowing Tanaka to leave after a new set of posting system rules were instituted this offseason that put a $20 million cap on posting fees. But the 25-year-old Tanaka had already stated a strong desire to jump to baseball’s highest (and richest) level of competition and Rakuten’s higher-ups have ultimately decided not to block his path. Tanaka could have left without permission after the 2015 season, so the clock was ticking anyway.

Rakuten's decision to post Masahiro Tanaka was announced by team president Yozo Tachibana.

Tanaka will be posted and Yankees, Angels, Diamondbacks, Rangers, Dodgers are among teams to watch in bidding war

One more in the mix: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1895 ... ten-eagles

Look, these guys want to get PAID. The Yankees HAVE to get this guy. Cashman had this plan of thinking, "Oh well I will rebuild this rotation with home grown talent and the master stroke of Pineda..." It ALL crumbled: Hughes is in Minny, Joba in Detroit, and Pineda's shoulder is a mystery. What was supposed to be 3 arms at a reduced price turned into:

CC Sabbathia: $23M

Kuroda: $16M

That's $39M for ONLY 2 arms in 2014. Now, the Yanks have to spend MORE coin for another arm that has NO guarantee will be a #2 (let's face it CC is a #3-4 slot at this point).

Wow...Again, NEVER hire a GM who was NEVER a scout.

Probably right on Seattle, but he does share an agent with Jeter........He seems like he can pitch so I hope we can get him, reminds me of young Bartolo Colon. Just too bad we have to pay him more under this new posting system (also shows how dumb Cash-man was to stop exploiting this loop hole).

NO WAY a franchise like Seattle can overtake NY Yankees in a bidding war after they gave Cano the "God Contract." Remember the bidding does NOT count against the luxury tax.

Yanks will win the bidding war because Cashman has NO Choice. The Yanks rotation is in shambles. Hal and Cash learned from their humiliation watching Hughes, Joba flounder with Nova, Pineda nursing injuries as their YES network ratings plummeted and the Red Sawx won the WS. You don't spend that much money and then do nothing for pitching.

Now, the REAL question remains...will Tanaka be worth what he is paid. So far, Yu is worth his price. So far.

Seattle has new TV money and a rich owner, the team wants to rebrand with a splash. They got Cano and have plenty more money so they may out bid for Tanaka.

Also youre getting the old posting system confused with the now new agreed upon system. There is a regular posting payment of 20 mill that goes to the Japanese team (this does not count against the cap), the rest of the money then goes to Tanaka or player xyz. Tanaka is going to get 17-20 mill per yr (which will count against the cap) compared to Yu getting something around 10-12, its a new money system.

Baseball is cyclical. There was a time, about 25 years ago, where the Mariners ate the Yankees lunch, stole Jay Buhner for Ken Phelps, and it's happening again. This time they fleeced the yankees by trading the obviously damaged, unmotivated Pineda (whether or not Montero works out, he was valued); grabbed Cano for obscene money, and now will complete this off season by ruining yankee plans and get Tanaka.

Montero. Who may not pan out (he didn't look great last year)

But he was the yankees top prospect at that point and there seemed to be interest.

Don't see it happening. Yanks have a greater need for pitching and Tanaka fills that need. The Yankees will win this bidding.

That's why I don't buy Arizona prepared to go all-in as these rumor wagons are posting. That's just hoping the Yankees overspend for Tanaka. Similar situation in Seattle, they don't need pitching...they NEED hitting. Cano is an island on that squad.

Well this Friday, we'll find out where Tanaka goes. Gotta believe the Yanks will/need this guy. It would be kind of surprising if someone like the Cubs or LA outbid them. That will speak volumes on where this franchise is going.

Posted my thoughts in the "have the Yanks made enough moves for the postseason" thread, I don't think we're getting him, and we may know today or tomorrow, not having to wait until Friday.
