A little late reporting but as many already know, the Yankees have traded Shawn Kelley to the Padres for a hard throwing 22 year old pitching prospect named Johnny Barbato.
Kelley, 31 by the start of next season, was heading into arbitration and the Yanks apparently didn't feel that the projected dollar value that he would be awarded (somewhere around $2.5-3 million) was worth it. Kelley struck people out but also gave up a ton of runs. He was either great or brutal and that general instability probably warranted the Yankees to try to move him.
Barbato is a hard throwing 22 year old that has 2 pitches, a fastball with movement that goes anywhere from 94-97mph and a sharp breaking curve. Both are considered plus pitches. He hasn't developed a 3rd pitch so the projection for him is a late inning reliever at this point. Some concerns about coach-ability but definitely has the stuff.
Yanks and Cashman trying to get younger either for a on the fly rebuild, or possibly accumulating assets for a big trade of some sort.

Also as far as what the Yankees have been able to do with Kelley, they've actually done real well relatively speaking. They traded Abraham Almonte, a, then, 23 year old, chunky 5'9" OF prospect to the Mariners in 2013 for Kelley. Kelley turned out to be a solid bullpen component the past 2 seasons for the Yanks and eventually netted them a talented young hard throwing pitching prospect in Barbato.
Almonte? He's played 2 seasons in the majors and has been medicore at best. Poor hitting, little power and no real production on the base paths. In fact, the Mariners ended up trading Almonte after just 1 season to the Padres for a 34 year old journeyman OF named Chris Denorfia who was even worse than Almonte was. Denorfia is now a FA. On top of that, the Mariners actually also included a hard throwing pitching prospect along with Almonte to get Denorfia lol.

Yes. Hopefully Barbato has a little more stomach for pitching in Yankee Stadium than Hughes did.
