ESPN NBARank 2014 (Mavs edition)

Post#1 » by Imon » Wed Sep 17, 2014 1:34 am

Just wanted to know what other guys feel about how the basketball pundits think of the Mavs players.

I think Dirk tends to get underrated constantly by those outside Dallas. In terms of raw numbers Dirk often doesn't compare well but in terms of on-the-court impact I'd say Dirk is top-10 even at his age.

Dirk will easily be the highest guy on the list on this team. I'd probably say Monta will be 2nd (although I think Tyson has the potential to have more impact). Then the Chandlers 3 & 4 (Parsons then Tyson).
I don't necessarily agree with the order but that's what I think nationally the pundits think of the team and they will be the top-4 guys on this team.

are there 500 players in the league? jeez, 13 x 30, a lot of them will get cut, no?
so where's the actual ranking? love to diss espn but we need their full rankings first.

as for dirk, yeah they don't really love him, don't know why. one or two years ago they made this story about today's greatest signature moves and they completely left out dirk's one-legger. that's like making a story about the greatest cities in the US - and leaving out NYC.

ESPN is only revealing 25 players per day in order to stretch this out.

Sports Illustrated is doing a similar thing where they are releasing the top-100 players for this coming season.

Here are the Mavs who made the list.

#14 - Dirk Nowitzki
#39 - Tyson Chandler
#56 - Chandler Parsons
#66 - Monta Ellis

Disappointed with Dirk being ranked 14 although it's not an terrible insult. I definitely feel like he should be over Aldridge and Melo.

Well, I'm sure Dirk doesn't care all that much he is in Germany right now promoting a documentary film about himself (The Perfect Shot).
Here's a video of him on German TV singing Hasselhoff's "Looking for Freedom"

compare who won the championship and the rankings of their players vs the rankings of Miami's and tell me it even matters what BSPN has to say on this matter. The pundits are little more than fans

We all know that ESPFraud and others are going to put east coast and west coast players higher than most. They will put players on neither coast higher only if they win a title or it would make them look stupid if they did not.

By the way Anthony is now the new Iverson for me most overrated player in the game.

I think 14 is about fair considering Dirk's age and likely further reduced minutes this year. I'd certainly take him over a couple of the guys ahead of him, but I don't think its some kind of travesty.

Im more surprised that they rank Parsons and Tyson ahead of Monta because I think Monta is clearly the 2nd best player on the team. But wow would I love for them to be right. IF Monta is the 4th best player this year that means we are really really good and that Tyson has regained his form of a couple years ago and that Parsons blossoms here.

And speaking of Parsons--I realize we overpaid to get him, but I expect him to have a huge year. He is going to have so many open looks playing with Dirk and Monta. The question for me is can he hold up defensively.

Yeah, I'd probably rate him 7 or 8, but that is honestly more to do with the state of the NBA in this era and it's superstars. Meaning, Dirk who I like as a player would never get a 7 or 8 ranking from me in say 1997 or whatever. He'd be more like 15 or so.

And yes, you're right about Monta. Monta is pretty much a top 30 player in the NBA.

Don't know how Parsons will do. He played bad the final 45 games of season last year.

Chandler is about right.

Problem with the Mavs is that they don't have a coach develop anyone else. So they're stuck with like 4 good players when you need like 7-8 good players to win and contend deep in the Playoffs.

Thought I might give this thread a bump since the whole team is now ranked.

So there are 16 guys in the NBA expected to be bigger impact guys on their team than Dirk. Can't say I'm mad about this honestly. If the small sample size of the preseason is any indication I think Dirk's scoring will go down below 20 ppg as 4 of the 5 starters on this team have the potential to be double-digit scorers (maybe even all 5).

If we can have 4 guys averaging around 14-18 ppg and the team wins then I think that can be a good thing. Plus the team can always turn to Dirk in a pinch anyways.

Also, If I had to rank the Mavs in order of their importance to the team it would be:

1. Dirk
2. Tyson
3. Parsons
4. Ellis
5. Jameer
6. Aminu (I think a really undersold addition to the team)
7. Harris
8. Wright ( RC usually only gives him significant minutes in certain match-ups)
9. Jefferson
10. Smith
11. Crowder

Sad to say the rest of the guys will probably be minutes eaters in garbage time.

So the ESPN panel thinks Damian Lillard is better than Dirk? I have a hard time accepting that. Dirk was far more efficient (PER 23.7 vs 18.7), even though he was the #1 option of his own team whereas Lillard was just LMA's sidekick. Dirk also averaged more points even though he averaged significantly fewer minutes (32 vs 36).

And it looks like ESPN will rank Joakim Noah, Marc Gasol and Tony Parker ahead of Dirk as well. Do these people honestly believe the Mavs will win more games if any one of those players switched places with Dirk? I thought the days of Dirk being overlooked and under-appreciated by the national media ended with the 2011 Finals. But I guess I was wrong.
