Steve had Sarver as the team owner. We have Cuban, just sayin'. Sarver offered Nash 6 per 2 years, yes you read that right. He was going to be paid less than Jared Dudley.

If Dirk is already contemplating on retiring at 36, I think it's more likely that if he were to return he'd sign 1 year deals worth 12-15 mil, will contemplate on retiring during the offseason and make a decision on coming back or not. Yes, the Brett Farve route, except probably in a classier way.

I can live with Dirk retiring as a Mav if resigning him doesn't kill any opportunity to sign 2 superstars.
This could work out well as we could be in a realistic position to sign 2 superstars with Dirk as our 3rd option.

I just dont know where these two mysterious UFAs come from. Mavs have never signed one. I hope that Bynum or Howard or Paul will move. I dont see good reasons for them given the new rules and the teams they are currently playing for.

Only one I could possibly see moving is Paul cause Sterling can sometimes be a cheap bastard.

It can happen, but I do not have a good feeling about it. These three players can make more money where they currently are playing. They are also on teams on the rise, with lakers loaded but heading over the hill. Mavs have a Short term roster.

Another 2 seasons and Dirk could end up between 10th-15th in all-time points scored. Right now he's 24th.

Agree but my main point is that I don't want to see the Mavs vastly overpay just to see Dirk retire as a Mav.
At some point in the near future this team needs to move forward with a different superstar.
There are basically 3 ways to land a superstar:
1. Free Agency
2. Draft
3. Trade

Trade is the only thing that has worked for this organization in the Cuban era so our best bet is to trade for one and then have the opportunity to resign at a max deal.
If Dirk is signed to a huge contract and the plan is to see him retire as a Mav, that limits our ability to make decent trades and acquire the right trade pieces to land a superstar.

My other point is that if we are in a position to sign a pair that want to play together (like DWill/D12 wanted) it could still be a decent situation with Dirk as a hopefully cheap 3rd option.

But I agree there will be few opportunities (if any) to land superstars going forward no matter what decisions are made with Dirk.

Dirk's next deal will be smaller and reflect his anticipated level of play - and almost certainly continue to be a bargain. Whether the Mavs get a superstar alongside won't be determined by what Dirk gets paid. The model will be Duncan's deal, or Garnett's.

I never really gave it much thought but Cuban has never acquired (via trade, draft, or free agency) a superstar player in their prime.
Chandler is probably the best acquisition in Cuban's era.

Duncan new deal - Reported 3/36
Garnett new deal - Reported 3/34

Wouldn't it be interesting to see Dirk take a Matt Carroll type contract ie Higher in the earlier years and taper off. 3/36, with 14, 12, and 10mm per

Chandler has been one of the best performing acquisitions. Terry,Jamison, Stackhouse, Butler, and Kidd (wearing #2) are other candidates.

Its early yet but OJ Mayo, Darren Collison, Chris Kaman, Elton Brand and Delonte West are all good pickups but not superstars. Even Lamar Odom was a good deal other than he became a big head case here in Dallas.
I think price will be no object in keeping Dirk until retirement. On the same hand I don't think Dirk would ask for more than he was worth either.

I personally think Duncan, KG and Nash are vastly overpaid.
It wouldn't surprise me if Dirk gets a bigger/better deal considering how much Cuban loves him and his role on this team will most likely be bigger than the roles those three currently have on their teams.

And I don't think any of those guys were even all-stars (correct me if I'm wrong...maybe Kidd) as Mavs let alone superstars.
I think that makes the championship and Dirk even that more special.

Agreed.

Jamison and Terry were both 6th man of the year in Dallas. Kidd was an all star in 2010 and an Olympian in 2008. Other than that nada

If I'm not mistaken Josh Howard was an all-star once but other than that I can't think of any other Cuban acquistion that was one other than Kidd in 2010.
