Re: Shams reporting trade with Miami
A $6M expiring deal has SO much more value at the trade deadline than a young guy who can't crack the rotation on a sub 500 team and has 2 years left at $1M per. We're not trading for McRoberts the player. We're trading for McRoberts the expiring contract asset. This is amplified by the crazy number of teams that are over the cap after this weird free agency period; this will be a big commodity for us come Feb. Am I the only one that sees this angle?

Yep. You are completely right.
Zach Lowe put up an article, basically speaking to how expiring contracts have become such low value over the last 3-ish years with the way the salary cap has grown. However, starting this year into the offseason, they will become much more valuable. We have put ourselves in a great position cap-wise to take advantage. If this move turns into getting a 1st round pick in next year's draft (as a potential facilitator in a 3-way or direct), it will come back to look genius.

We go from a player that definitely won't play in Hammons and get a player that may play some if healthy plus a 2nd. Not too bad especially if we can flip MC's expiring. Too bad we couldn't develop Hammons.

Solid for what? Contending? Rebuilding? He fits it neither way and he's 30 year's old now. The earliest pick come back is 2022's. That's a ridiculous offer we should refuse.
You got some big plans for Hammons or something? Odds are he never even amounts to Mejri level production.
The trade is a win all around... we shed salary for 2018 and gain a second rounder
That's the way I feel about this trade too. Hammonds hadn't done any more than Sarge did when he was here. Looks like a career 3rd maybe 2nd teamer. Mavs clear cap space for next off season and get a second which could end up being a high second by the time they actually get to beat around the pick.

If they decide to hold on to Wes his contract becomes a valuable asset after this coming season too. So the Mavs could have huge trade assists in back to back off seasons. Ideally I know it would be best to dump Wes as soon as possible but worst case scenario even has an upside.

I love the move.
No Big FA targets left this summer, so we dump the money owed to Hammons for another two years to preserve cap space. And we got a second.
Hammons was owed over three million over the next two years. So we paid a shade under three million for a second and additional cap flexibility. I'm happy with that.

Depends. If a team is looking for an expiring contract and is willing to give up a good young player or a high 1st round pick I could see them trading him. Other than that I think they keep him and take the cap space.
