Throwback Thread - '92-'93 Jays

Post#1 » by s e n s i » Mon Oct 25, 2010 6:25 pm

For those who are too young to remember or weren't avid Jays fans back then or those who just want to relive some amazing moments as jays fans.

I have these tapes on VHS somewhere in a box and had some weird nostalgic feeling that inspired me to look these up- thankfully some guy uploaded both videos in their entirety on Youtube.

There's about 6 parts to each video.

- does candy maldonado look like yunel escobar or what?
- one thing they dont have is kelly gruber taunting the atlanta crowd with a tomahawk chop after catching the final out of the game in game 2.
- oooooh so that's where brian wilson got his lumberjack beard. Jeff Reardon reincarnate.

1992

Love the part at 4:25 when Timlin asks Joe for the game ball, and Joe was kind of reluctant but was so elated with the win that he gave it up.

What I've always wanted to see again was Carter's entire at bat against Williams. Watching it at the time
was an almost unbearably tense experience. Joe was swinging for the fences all the way. But it's not on youtube.

Cox taking Deion Saunders (not even mentioned in the clip) out of the game in 1992 was the key to victory in that clinching game. I'll always wonder what would have happened if he had been left in. I never liked Cox, although he did us a favour there.

I got the 1993 WS review VHS tape as a present and I had that thing memorized from start to finish. Can't find it online anywhere but I bet I could still recite lines from it.

The actual 1992 and 1993 World Series videos (video documenting just the series itself) is more in-depth and has some great clips too. Can't find those anywhere online either though. I'm looking for that Robbie Alomar catch when he was ranging to his left and dove to catch a texas-leaguer along the 1st base line.

I also have the two World Series tapes plus "Oh Canada" and "Back2Back" on VHS. I have to get those converted at some point to DVD. I believe the WS tapes were re-released on DVD at some point, but the other two were not (and likely never will be).

I remember when Duane Ward was a terrible reliver. Always blowing games. Fans wanted him out of town. Then suddenly he harnessed that sinker/slider. And just like that we had a closing tandem better than Eckersley.

I wish the other video series was available online as well.

I would also like to see some old news reports from that day about the celebration and what not.

What's better than Joe and Cito's jackets at the 93 celebration? Nothing. And that awful Coke song. What a wonderfully tacky decade the 90s was.

Part of the experience was the failures, too. 85 against the Royals. 87 vs Alan Trammell and the Tigers. The Oakland juggernaut. Always on the cusp, but it seemed we were jinxed.

One of these videos also had guys in the clubhouse spray painting the top half of their foreheads to mask their receding hairlines . I think Joe Carter did it and someone else. Quality stuff

Looking at the '93 batting lineup, it is insane:

1- Rickey Henderson
2- Roberto Alomar
3- John Olerud
4- Joe Carter
5- Paul Molitor
6- Ed Sprague
7- Tony Fernandez
8- Pat Borders
9- Devon White

They scored 45 runs in 6 games!

The parties on yonge street were fun. Things were getting a little crazy the 2nd year.

The trip downtown on the streetcar was half the fun.

No that was the Phillies. They were the dumb meatheads and the Jays were the classy pros, to put it in dichotomous terms.

Hahaha @ 6:44 of part 5 in the '92 video. Jays were up 9-0 in the 5th inning of a game surely headed for postponement, so they swung at everything in the top half of the inning to get it over with as quickly as possible. Alfredo Griffin is now a legend in my books for swinging at a pitch ten feet high and five feet outside the plate.

Finally got some time to sit thru the vids. Brought back a lot of good memories. Cheers op.

Played scarborough ball back then with a guy who was bat boy for the '92 team. Every game he was sporting something cool (robbies batting glove, grubers sweatband - nasty i know).

Sprague lived in the beaches, and we'd do drive by cheerings after every playoff win on the way to cruise yonge. Even when they were on the road lol.

Top 3 in batting average in '93. Won't see that again for a long time.

So no one can find the World Series videos online?

Would love to add them to this thread.
