The San Diego Padres will miss $215 million man Clayton Kershaw in baseball's North American opener Sunday night.

They'll face pretty much the rest of the $235 million roster of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who sit atop baseball's payroll perch and the NL West.

Padres third baseman Chase Headley said his team has a ''healthy dislike'' of the Dodgers, who won the division last year after going on a 42-8 run that began with a victory in San Diego.

The Dodgers will turn to left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu (1-0), who won the second of two games against the division rival Arizona Diamondbacks in Sydney. The Dodgers came home leading the NL West at 2-0.

The Padres, who have a relatively modest payroll of $90 million, the highest in their history, will counter with right-hander Andrew Cashner, who was 10-9 with a 3.09 ERA last year.

This replay system is a **** joke.

San Fran just got screwed on a pick off attempt where on replay it was clear as day that he was out... it should have been the third out but wasn't overturned, Bochy lost his challenge and on the next play the umps screwed a call at the plate on a passed ball, but Bochy wasn't able to have it reviewed.

Three plus minutes to make a decision and the wrong calls are still being made. And of course that's in addition to this ridiculousness of the managers coming out and standing on the field for 30 plus seconds just to find out if they should challenge it.

Either drop the challenge system and have someone reviewing it immediately or dump this garbage altogether.

Baseball never wanted this; it's obvious. Their opinion is clearly that it is "sour grapes" to appeal and that making mistakes is acceptable given individuals making difficult calls. What they want to do is show everyone that their umps are making a high percentage of the calls correctly anyway; and thus have it scrapped.

When I watched the pre-season and saw that every single call was upheld i knew it was a red herring; perhaps only the Yankees and Red Sox will have enough gravtias to get a couple of correct (or incorrect) calls in their favour--it woulnd't do to poke the bear.

They might change a call on some fair/foul stuff for HRs, but yeah, I as much as you believe they won't be overturning any bang/bang judgment stuff. They don't want the umps to have tons of overturns and then the media running away with that story and chiding them for not implementing it 20 years ago. Then you would see a big hunt through history and "what could have been" type stories coming out left and right. The last thing they need is to be made to look like is fools for so long.

Beeston tried to ruin Paxton's career by exposing Boras, but it seems he had no such luck there. Great start by him against an Angels team that seems to lack starting pitching (Santiago, Richards, and Skaggs is their 3-4-5?).
