As for the bat, it's the awesome K:BB ratio he's displayed that has me very high on him. I think that's a good barometer for future success, particularly if a prospect can sustain it at higher levels like Jansen has done. It's one thing to walk a lot in rookie ball where half the guys can't consistently throw a strike.

Defensively he projects to be average/able to stick. Just arm is a big issue for him, not saying he won't grow into that but that's a pretty big "if". Right now I don't see him sticking at C at the ML level, but that can change and obviously you are going to keep giving him reps there because the upside if he can stick is huge.

K:BB ratio for hitters is so undervalued. To me it is the one stat that stabilizes fast, even in the minor leagues. Guys who are over matched will always struggle with K's and BB's, even if their batted balls find holes/hit LD's whatever. The other thing to realize is the vast range of talent in the lower minor leagues, you might face a young Syndergaard but for every one of those you see 3 guys who throws straight fastballs with 0 command. It is easy to build up a decent stat line when you are over matched (although it is hard to maintain). wOBA really takes 1000 PA to stabilize at the ML level (Tom Tango wrote about that), so production based statistics are really lagging. Really K:BB is one of the only stats I actually put stock into at that level.

Totally agree with the "can't throw a strike thing". Low minor guys all throw hard but the two things lagging are FB command and secondary stuff. The thing to remember though is most guys throw a "F u fastball" (scouting term) which is essentially they throw as hard as they can and aim for the plate instead of a spot. Although some guys may have decent walk numbers, it doesn't mean they are actually locating pitches. Control is one thing, command is another. Most have okay control, and those who don't are usually prospects who use secondary stuff well. It is possible for a pitcher with terrible control/command to have a low walk rate due to just throwing a high percentage of fastballs and have lucky batted ball outcomes.

Jansen has a good bat, and defensively he's young enough you can hope he gains some velocity. I just find it crazy that so many people actually think he still projects as a ML catcher. I think there is a better chance he doesn't make it at the C than he does. Still a good bat, you can use those in a lot of places.

Lots to like offensively on the farm tonight:

Olivares 1-3 with his 15th HR. Now slugging .532 on the season.

Bichette with an off night, just 2-5 with a couple of singles. Vladdy 2-4 with a BB and K.

New Hampshire wins a laugher 15-8. Jansen 3-4 with a 2B and BB. Urena 3-5 with a 2B. Gurriel 3-5 with a couple doubles and a K. Ramirez 2-3 with a 2B and 2 BBs.

Tellez 2-4 with 2B and K. Would love to see him put that rough first half behind him. Saunders looking awful in Buffalo so far, another 0'fer tonight.

Also, Warmoth was 4-6 with two doubles. And Riley Adams was 2-6 with a walk off double.

Vladdy Jr. ranked 8th on Keith Law's Top 50 prospects mid-season update. Bichette ranked 34th.

8. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., 3B, Toronto Blue Jays

Vlad might be his father with patience. He's already outperforming his dad in several key areas while playing in low-A at a year younger than when the elder Vlad was there. He's OK at third base now, but his body is already big and he'll have to work on conditioning to stay on the dirt.

34. Bo Bichette, SS, Toronto Blue Jays

Bichette has a big bat-wrap and almost wild approach, but he has outstanding hand-eye coordination and plus bat speed, allowing him to hit .384/.448/.623 before a promotion to high-A earlier this week. He's most likely a second baseman in the long term.

Good to see Bichette put his slump behind him, going 2-3 with a BB and a sacrifice fly. And with that his OPS is over 1.000, where it apparently belongs. Vladdy 1-5. Pentecost back at C and goes 3-5 with a K, but allows 2 SB and a PB. Alford on a rehab stint goes 1-3. All 10 hits by Dunedin were singles. Throw in 9 walks and they were able to score 8 runs for the victory.

Edit: Bichette also had 2 SBs, because why not. Probably shouldn't read too much into that though cause the team stole 5 in the game off the opposing catcher.

Jansen goes 1 for 1 with 3 walks today. I love that patience.

With Bichette, while I don't think he will ever be a threat on the basepads, I do think he's elite when it comes to identifying and exploiting his opponents weaknesses, and I think that's why I still feel he's underrated as a prospect.

Chris Rowley started at Buffalo and went six shutout innings with 5K and a BB. Assuming he has a couple more decent appearances I wouldn't mind giving him a shot in place of Bolsinger.

Fields now batting .321 and getting on base ~38% of the time after ~230 plate appearances in Buffalo. Did not see that coming. Plus he's stolen 25 bags in 33 attempts (32 for 40 across both levels this year). The guy's 27 - nothing to lose by giving him some reps in the outfield. Trade Pillar and let Fields patrol CF the rest of the year.

Gurriel seems to have hit his stride in AA ball. 2-2 tonight with a double and a couple walks.

I'd be happy to see an OF of Alford, Fields and Joey with Smith Jr. rotating in.

Go youngish and see what happens, at this point what's the worst that can happen? They field better and maybe get a hit with RISP?
That's what she said.

We need some glimmers of hope

So...

Sean Reid-Foley tonight for NH

6.2 IP, 4H, 1R (1ER), 2BB, 12K

https://www.milb.com/fisher-cats/news/reid-foley-wins-with-career-high-12-strikeouts/c-243632170/t-196097244

I also like Lourdes Gurriel Jr, 2-3 tonight, and not fazed by Double A pitching.
