@ChandlerGreer54 no. He chose not to discuss financial details other than to say he got better than fifth-round slot value.

2014 Post Draft Rumours/Signings

It's crazy how much money is given to a high school student. The draft and entire minor league system has to be an absolute money pit.

The draft is incredibly good value for teams. We'll end up spending a shade under $10m on the draft; if exactly one of the players in this draft make the majors and produce 3 WAR over their first three big league seasons, we'll have recouped the money spent -- relative to what you'd need to spend in free agency for that production -- and then some.

One who will get away, but would be thrilled to be re-drafted by the Jays in three years.

That is the slot level for our picks in the top ten rounds. MLB restricts teams to spending that amount as a total bonus pool, plus up to $100k per pick after the top ten rounds. We can exceed that by a further 5% (bit under $500k) and only incur a financial penalty; exceed it by more than 5% and we'd have to surrender first round picks in future drafts, which isn't happening.

That they restrict teams to that owes largely to the fact that the Jays -- and a couple other teams -- started gaming the system and spending massive piles of cash in the draft.

Yeah i know the rules, i'm just curious did we actually sign him to slot value? Below slow? Or above slot, etc.

That is his slot value and that was what he signed for, according to this article posted by Met:
http://m.insidenova.com/sports/prince_w ... l?mode=jqm
I don't think the OP has a code for above or below slot yet.
(edit: actually, we may be on form. i think we've done green for over, red for under, and black for slot in the past)

Ah, okay. I didn't edit anything with the players themselves. We don't yet know dollar figures for any of the others, beyond the fact that Lane Thomas himself stated that he signed above-slot.

Sean Reid-Foley is signing. I think he mistook Dunedin for Clearwater, but whatever...

LOL. Great job AA!

Reverse tactics: Ink SRF first for well-above slot. Only so much below-slot-money left for Hoffman, who has no option but to accept... The Reid-Foley contract sets Hoffman's price.

That doesn't work. In order to go "well-above slot" for SRF you need to bank savings elsewhere...most likely in the first round (where you'll be able to make up the biggest margin). If you try to play hardball with Hoffman and he walks away (which he absolutely can, he DOES have leverage) then you lose his slot allotment all together and you are left scrambling to make up the over-slot bonus you just gave SRF from elsewhere. In that sense he could actually screw you as losing his slot allotment is worse than "only" making a marginal saving on his deal.

The idea that Hoffman has "no option" but to accept an offer is very naive. He was a $5+ million dollar arm before his injury...his elite talent gives him leverage to go back into next year's draft at which point he'll be nearing the end of his rehab (ie: he'll be healthy) and some team will gladly pay him ~$3+ million even if he doesn't pitch in a single game. He has too much talent, and TJ surgery is far too successful.

The more realistic scenario in this case is that we likely already have agreements in place with all of these top picks, and now we're just formally getting them signed. These are players we have been linked to for a while, we have a good idea of what it will take to sign each and the budged has already been planned out.

Heidt, a junior, still has one year of eligibility remaining, but said Saturday he will sign with the Blue Jays.

"We talked money before the draft and they gave me what I was looking for," Heidt said.

Anyone heard anything about Hoffman or Pentecost yet?

I'm assuming Hoffman signs based on his TJ surgery and the face that his Twitter page is littered with BJs tweets and background images.
That's what she said.

I asked a Hoffman question of Faleris in today's draft chat and this was his response:
Because I'm confident my voiced opinion will have no bearing on the actual leverage, I can say I had him valued at $3.5 MM. His leverage relies on his elite pre-injury profile (which is legitimate leverage) but his BATNA (best alternative to a negotiated agreement) isn't pretty -- rehab on his own, likely with help from his advising agency, and throw a handful of times before next year's draft. My own approach would be to reach an agreed upon minimum with a promise to give any and all savings up to the 15% allotment overage once the other selections have been negotiated.

I like his suggested approach.
