I think the Rays are selling high on Myers, but we will see. He will need to hit a ton to make up for his defense.

Grab Tulo, move Reyes to 2B and have the most potent lineup in baseball?

I'd take Morneau though

You have much more confidence in the dynamic duo of Pompey/Pillar than I do!

Well compared to our CF production last year they will likely be an upgrade.

Pillar gets a lot of flack but he has always hit LHP in the minors and finally last year he started hitting them in the show. He plays good defense and he plays hard.

Personally I'd play Pompey every day but a Pompey/Pillar platoon would be fine IMO.

Sanchez and Norris though.
9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

Pompey doesn't have a platoon issue. He shouldn't be platooned at all. Play him everyday and hope that his defense and base running make up for whatever offensive struggles he will have.

Pillar should be platooned with Saunders.

So the Royals got Medlen for 10M?

Wow. The Royals might have just spent 40M and ended up with 0 WAR.

Rios, Morales, Medlen and Volquez. Fangraphs has them pegged at 3.3 WAR together but I could easily see them being worth 0.

And they almost won the WS!

Edit: Nevermind, the 2017 option is 10M. Not even Dayton Moore could be that dumb.

AA has said Saunders would be the everyday LF. And he's been fine over the last three seasons against lefties, so I expect he'll get his shot in that regard.

If that's the case, then I'd start Pillar in AAA and have Carrera as the fourth OF. If a platoon is not required, then Pillar really isn't needed as a seldom used bench player. Let him get everyday AB's in the minors and come up in case of need.

Honestly, as useful as platoons can be, they really limit bench flexibility. I'll be glad if the Jays get away from platoons, as long as they have players who are not "Lind versus LHP" bad against one side.

Pillar has nothing left to prove in AAA. In my opinion he's earned a job with the big club in some capacity.

I too want Saunders and Pompey to get full-time at-bats. That said, I can see Pillar getting plenty of work, say 3 games a week (regular days off for Pompey and Saunders, cycling Bautistat through DH/1B) plus late-game substitutions.

They just DFA'd Johnny Giavotella to make room for Medlen. I've said it before and I'd say it again, I'd love for the Jays to bring Giavotella in with a chance to compete for the 2b job. The guy has been a great hitter for a number of years at AAA and has struggled every year in KC. I'd be interested to see if a change of scenery could help him. At the very least he'd be good depth for Buffalo.

Speaking of Buffalo, Kottaras signed a minor league deal with the White Sox.

Not expecting it to be a standout position this year, but I do think that Pompey can be tolerably mediocre offensively and above-average defensively, which is pretty useful in CF. Whether that's what is best for his long-term development is another matter, but they appear to be set on it.

The A's have traded Derek Norris to the Padres

The Padres and Athletics have continued their busy offseasons with a multiplayer deal that will send catcher Derek Norris to San Diego, Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News reports (Twitter links). The full trade is Norris, right-hander Seth Streich and an international signing slot to the Padres with right-handers Jesse Hahn and R.J. Alvarez going to Oakland, Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan reports.

What are the odds that James Shields signs with Toronto?

Unless AA is planning on shocking the world again, I'd say the chances are next to none.

I'm not a fan of Sanchez in the rotation to begin the season, but all the SP options available from outside the organization, even the 2nd and 3rd tier ones, are slowly disappearing, so outside of using Estrada in that role, the Jays don't have much of a choice. It's either Sanchez or Norris at this point.

I find it funny Padres have both Josh Johnson and Brandan Morrow on their pitchign staff. I wonder if we can send them dickey for something good!

They can reform jays pitching staff in the NL west...

Return to Toronto Blue Jays
