Re: OFFICIAL: 2014/2015 OFFSEASON THREAD
I'm not a Rasmus fan by any means, but I'm glad he did not go to Baltimore. The last thing I needed to see was Colby catching a case of winneryness and putting up a 4 WAR season before inevitably leaving the following season to become replacement level elsewhere.
Belisario was unlucky last season (3.54 FIP) but I still have painful memories of counting on the White Sox to beat divisional foes last season only to see him blow saves like he was an expert at it.
I don't mind Johan as a SP flier. I can't imagine he'd get an MLB deal at this point, and having more options in case of Sanchez imploding is not a bad thing. I am still a little scared that, after Norris, the main SP depth is Hendriks, Estrada, and Francis.

Janssen and Redmond were the two main culprits for the terrible bullpen. If we replace them with Badenhop and Estrada that's a nice improvement. It's relatively easy to construct a good bullpen, after all.

Maybe if we had kept Napoli. But even then, it's sacrilege to throw any shade on one of the greatest trades in the history of sports.

Ichiro is offered 2m/1 yr? We can't match that for a backup option to Pompey?

i'm sure they could match that easily but why would they want to, pillar is better than ichiro (who would be a total disaster in CF) at this point

The problem isn't cost, it's that Ichiro offers us absolutely nothing. He's a below-average hitter who cannot play center field (and has not regularly for many, many years), and he's a fringe-average defender at a corner outfield spot. Making matters worse, last year witnessed his strikeout rate spiking massively, likely because he is old as Methuselah and one's batspeed tends to fall off right around when the AARP cheques come in.
There is zero reason why we would bring him in; he makes no sense on this roster.

I suppose if Ichiro would bring in 2M in added revenue from Japan teams would be lining up to give it to him; I just find it hard to believe that isn't the case.
He's still pretty big over there, but I suppose Japanese companies won't be as eager to take out advertisement space if he's not an every day player. Can they sell space in the dugout and just promise to show him on camera several times a game?

totally disagree. he's a nice backup option for all of and dh.
adds nothing? he can definitely still field and only 1 jay had more sb.
below avg hitter? only 3 jays out hit him and he was way over .300 until pressed into everyday duty.
and they make way more than 2m.
pillar better? don't make me laugh.

Re: OFFICIAL: 2014/2015 OFFSEASON THREAD
Ichiro has begun to have a reverse split, where he can hit lefties well and righties not so much. This is likely from the bat speed Schad is refering to, lefties have those big sweeping breaking balls that Ichiro has less problem handling still, because it's a slower pitch. Given that we have Pillar as 4th outfielder to hit lefties already, or in a pinch hit situation Tolleson or Valencia could be used instead and heck they can play left field for 2 -3 innings if need be. Aside from that, where hitting lefties seemed to be one of the Jays weaknesses last year, it shouldn't be this year. Adding Donaldson and Martin will definitely help there.
If we even have $2mill to spend it should be on bullpen. I don't feel like giving away games with Drabek, Estrada or Redmond. It should also be noted Pillar had a better UZR/150 than Ichiro last season and costs less.

You might be surprised at how little 15 stolen bases are worth when you factor in times caught stealing. And the only way he will outhit anybody in this lineup is if you look at batting average rather than wOBA. He's projected for a .288 wOBA which for reference, is less than Josh Thole's projected .290.
The only thing Ichiro brings is league average corner outfield defense and an occasional pinch runner. We can't use a roster spot on that even if it's free, never mind for $2M. There's just no upside. He has been a terrible hitter for the past 4 years and chances of that changing at age 41 are slim to none.

Think the reverse split is a product of his swing. When southpaws throw it seems that the balls generally hit go the other way. Either way, Ichiro is not the answer.

Between Dirks and Pillar, I don't think fourth OF is a need. I mean, if they could acquire Jarrod Dyson, then sure, but a replacement level fourth OF is not going to make any sort of difference.

Between the Dirks eras I thought OF depth was a pretty big gap. I very much dislike relying on two rooks (basically) without better established vets waiting in the wings, which was why I was not an immediate poopooer of the first Ichiro rumour. I still wasn't a fan of the idea, but saw it as something of a potentially necessary evil. Necessary isn't really the right word, but it being something that would have to be paid for one way or another if you couldn't get the right camp invitee, which for my money they got with Dirks.
Far better to leave the depth chart with Pillar as 4th and Dirks as the 5th rather than slotting Ichiro in ahead from the jump. The argument to be made for Ichiro originally would've been if they were sending Pompey to AAA you could throw Ichiro, Saunders, Pillar at CF/LF/4OF and just see what sticks, but that doesn't really appeal to me. I still won't be too happy if Pompey needs more seasoning and we end up with Saunders in CF and Dirks/Pillar platooning in LF, but that's a much better roster construction than prior to Dirks.

Projected 1.2 WAR for 2015. Can play SS and 2B. Trouble with the law seems to be an issue, though. Also suspended in 2013 for PED use.

A Cabrera once suspended for PED using playing for the Jays? Something of a tradition
