Skydome to have real dirt infield for 2016 season

Post#1 » by Geddy » Wed Feb 3, 2016 10:24 pm

TORONTO - The Toronto Blue Jays' infield is getting an upgrade.

The team announced Wednesday they'll begin installing a regulation dirt infield at Rogers Centre next week that will be ready for the 2016 regular season.

The work will involve excavation of the cement floor at the stadium in the base path and infield areas to a depth of 30.48 centimetres and will impact an area of approximately 1,115 square metres. Layers of gravel, sand and clay will be inlayed in the excavated areas to ensure proper moisture content and conditions suitable to a major league playing surface.

"We are very excited to proceed with this project," senior vice president Stephen Brooks said in a release. "This will both improve the surface for the players and also enhance the atmosphere of the stadium for our fans."

The team says the excavation will not interfere with events being held at Rogers Centre in the coming weeks.

It's not the grass we were hoping for but it's a start in the right direction. Maybe if they figure out drainage with the dirt they can move up to grass for the rest of the field in the future.

This will be good for the infielders in the long run since they won't have to handle so many odd skips off of turf anymore.

I was hoping they would put real dirt on the warning track too.

This is great. But what's the long term goal. When are they going all in?

Also like someone mentioned, the warning track should have been added to this announcement

The MLB the Show 16 gameplay twitch stream features a game at the dome. It features the dirt infield. Really makes the place look a ballpark.

If it looks so much better and helps the wear and tear on infielders then I don't understand why this wasn't done long ago.

I think it's because the dome was shared with the Argos.

Seeing how much work is needed for a simple infield I think the dream of real grass will never come true, it would be way too expensive and complicated.

Yeah, I think concrete removal might be like 0.001% of the cost of putting in grass. Don't know why anybody would worry about that.

Real dirt basepaths or real dirt infield?

EDIT: Brain fart. Yeah, will be like Tampa as far as I can tell. Looks like they've only dug up the areas close to the old dirt spots for now. Seems that this is a form of Tulo insurance, to be honest.

Tropicana type dirt infield is what most anticipated, dirt basepaths are not a big deal.
