It doesn't even make sense. He doesn't fill a need, he has a huge contract and he doesn't bat LH. Seemed like a false rumour to me. Makes sense for the Orioles though

Part of me wants to see the Red Sox completely gut their loaded farm system for Sale. Dombrowski style.

Much though I enjoy seeing them gut their system, Sale's making a mere $12m over the following three seasons; I'd prefer that they gut their system and leave themselves with an overburdened payroll, if at all possible.

MILWAUKEE — The Cubs' pursuit of flame-throwing left-hander Aroldis Chapman has reached the critical stage.

Gleyber Torres, 19, the Cubs' top infield prospect, was scratched from his game with Class A Myrtle Beach on Sunday.

It's not certain whether the size of the deal is tied to the Cubs securing an extension for Chapman, 28, whose contract expires after this season.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports first reported the Cubs and Yankees were in the final stages of a deal involving Chapman and Torres.

A source said the Yankees also have inquired about outfielder Eloy Jimenez, 19, who hit a three-run home run and made a spectacular catch two weeks ago at the Futures Game at San Diego.

Torres and Jimenez are two of the Cubs' top prospects and were signed to bonuses worth a combined $4.5 million out of the international draft in 2013.

Chapman deal official:

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/191611658/cubs-to-acquire-aroldis-chapman-from-yankees/

The Cubs have agreed to a deal to acquire hard-throwing left-hander Aroldis Chapman from the Yankees, a source told MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez. The clubs have not confirmed.

The Yankees will receive a multiplayer package in return for Chapman, headlined by 19-year-old shortstop Gleyber Torres, the Cubs' No. 1 prospect and No. 24 overall per MLB Pipeline. Torres, who may eventually switch to second or third base, was hitting .275 with nine homers in 94 games for Class A Advanced Myrtle Beach.
The Yankees will also receive outfielder Billy McKinney, right-hander Adam Warren and outfielder Rashad Crawford.

Good to see Chapman in the NL but Yankees got a boatload for a rental. It looks like the Reds should have hung onto him longer.

Upton is due 16M next, no thanks.

We all know Rogers never spends like they should, so every dollar counts, and i rather not pay Upton that much and i wouldn't think about paying more prospect wise for the Padres to eat some of that contract.

Bautista / Edwin are not bolting, they are being replaced. If we get a RF at the deadline that means bye bye to Bautista. I am sure Edwin will be replaced by Smoak + another player next year.

Upton and Smoak replacing EE and potentially JoeyBats is awful? That other player better be damn good.

We need to win this year, that's for sure.

My guess is if these Upton rumours are true, one of Saunders or Bautista is gone for help for pitching.

I mean, Melvin Upton's salary is hefty, but he's a good player, and AJ Preller is just an awful GM.. It's at least worth exploring trying to rip them off.

What makes you think Preller is an awful GM? I'd argue the opposite based on this year's transactions.

Upton is not a good player, not sure where you see otherwise. He hasn't had a good season since 2007/2008.

Where were you in 2014/2015? He had possibly the most self-destructive offseason for a GM in recent memory. It was beyond brutal. Kemp, Upton, Upton, Shields, Kimbrel. Short-sighted trades one after another that just gutted their entire system while simultaneously costing a fortune and not even coming out of it with a good team. With the amount of cash and prospect capital he spent he should have had the #1 team in baseball, as opposed to a disaster of a team that finished with an even worse record than the year before. And despite having a bad team with aging players on expiring contracts, he didn't make any trades at the deadline because he couldn't get what he wanted. He's cashing in on the whimpering remnants of that splurge a year too late, and without getting anything for Kennedy and Justin Upton, although hasn't done anything terrible other than that. But the damage has been done.

What makes you think this was his moves to make? Who's to say it wasn't ownership's mandate he try to go for it? I think he's stocked the farm system quite nicely since those moves and think the Padres are on the up and up.
