Colts To Release Manning

Postby Bleeding Blue on Tue Mar 06, 2012 6:31 pm

I can't say I didn't see this coming and it is likely the best for the Colts, but I am still very upset about it.

Official announcement expected tomorrow

Well he's not going to a team that can't win now since he's old. Can't wait to see all the teams trying to get him though, kinda sucks for the Packers and Matt Flynn though :(

I got chills for some reason when I read the alert I got about it. It just doesn't seem right.

In the more analytic sense, I can't really say I support the move. I think it's relatively stupid for the Colts to put everything on Andrew Luck's back like this. Making this kid, who hasn't even been drafted yet let alone put NFL pads on, inherit a team like this just seems like bad news to me.

As for whoever wins the bidding war for Peyton... Good luck. I say that because I'm still one of the skeptics who thinks he won't actually play another down in the NFL.

If Manning turns out to be healthy Irsay lied to the entire fan base a few months ago when he said, "if Peytons healthy, he's a Colt." He said that assuming he was done and it may be backfiring, if he is healthy I will no longer be an Irsay fan.

It's the right move. Manning would be a good 1 yr tutor for Luck, but not for the cost of 28 million and the multiple 1sts or w/e that he can get them. As a small market team that's too much for nostalgia.

I understand the move. Luck will start right away, so no tutoring from Manning was in the plan. Glad that Manning can now have his pick of where he wants to play. Put him on a team that has a great defense and some good pieces on offense, but needs a quality QB, and you have a really good playoff run coming. Personally, I'd love to see him a Texan for the next 2-3 years. Or perhaps a Cardinal.

Nice little piece on what Bleeding Blue mentioned about Irsay's take on Peyton.

They won't get multiple firsts for him if they cut him. If they paid out the roster bonus, he becomes much easier to trade next year and the year after.

I feel like they never made a REAL attempt to re-sign, or restructure. If he played one good year, Andrew Luck would benefit, and the Colts would be able to trade him for a gold mine. If he doesn't ? Luck comes in anyway, and they lose out on cap space they probably won't even use.

Wow, who would've thought after the 2010 NFL season would be Peyton's last season as a Colt.
I hope he gets to play again but i also think he's done. He's got nothing else to prove. He's got his ring and MVP's and stats and records.

How much money is he losing?

Postby Shpati21 on Wed Mar 07, 2012 6:06 am

So how much money is he losing? He is losing that money with that Colt's contract, right?

They way I understand it the cap hit isnt even much worse if we kept him (couple million) He is still like a 11 million cap hit after we cut him. The 28 million would come from Irsays pocket, so it wasnt a cap issue it was a cash issue. Granted, we would also have Peytons salary which would hurt.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I would guess there are as many Peyton fans as there are Colts fans, it could get ugly. Peyton made this team relevant in Indianapolis, before that it had no real following. He made basketball fans football fans. Sigh.

He made $26 million last year without ever taking a single snap. He's fine. In fact, according to Darren Rovell on Twitter, he's made about $174 million in his career. He will be fine.
