Offseason Plan (Post Deadline)

Post#1 » by jaredtyshaf » Fri Feb 22, 2013 12:19 pm

The Trade Deadline has come and gone and like most predicted we stood pat after dealing Tay and Daye. Our goal was clearly to create cap space and we did that in a major potentially having 30+ Million in cap space. The question now is, what do we plan to do with it? Are we going to.....

1. Spend it all on Free Agents this summer?

2. Try and pull off trade with a team trying to dump salary Pau to Lakers style?

3. Save it for resigning Monroe, Drummond and Knight in the future and avoid going into the luxury tax?

What are everyone's predictions/hopes for this off season and beyond?

We would obviously have to throw in Jerebko and maybe another 2nd rounder.

LMAO @ the Harden comment

My plan hasn't changed since opening night... Redick, Calderon and Millsap

Nothing at the deadline changed what this team needs.

That's some terrible D.

Great offense off the bench though.

Putrid for Houston. I think they hang up the phone as soon as Dumars mentions Harden.

Is this what you WANT us to do in the offseason, or what you think will happen in the offseason?

What I EXPECT:

Dumars re-signs Calderon, Bynum, and Maxiell
Dumars goes after and signs Iggy to a MAX or near-MAX deal
He picks BPA in the lottery (just for fun, I'll guess at Oladipo)

Calderon / Bynum
Knight / Stuckey / Oladipo / English
Iggy / Singler / Middleton
Maxiell / CV / Jerebko
Monroe / Drummond / Kravtsov

Overall; an improved team from the one that started the 2012-13 season, probably good enough to get the 6-seed in the playoffs (best-case scenario) and flame out in the 1st round. IMO, its a jumbled mess and not the direction I'd like to see us go in - just my honest opinion of what I see Dumars doing.

I'm pretty sure he was joking with the Harden trade (atleast I hope so).

And I really hope you are wrong with that off season!

What I expect:

-We sign Calderon to 2yr/10mil deal as our 6th man
-Let Bynum, Maxiell, and Spaghetti walk
-Pistons pick up a SG in the lottery and pick up a defensive big in the 2nd round
-Trade (expiring)Stuckey for Wilson Chandler straight up
-Sign Monta Ellis to a 2yr/20mil deal
-Save the rest of the money

Knight/Calderon
Monta Ellis/Lotto pick
Chandler/Singler
Bullwinkle/Charlie V/Draft pick
Drummond/Bullwinkle/Slava

Pieces to add this summer:

one or more of:

Otto Porter - 3
Trey Burke - 1 (Calderon insurance)
Victor Oladipo - 2
Tony Mitchell - 4

one of:
Nate Wolters - 1 (Calderon insurance)
Carrick Felix - 3
Adreian Payne (4)

FA
Tyreke Evans - 1, 2, or 3
Paul Millsap - 4
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!

I'm gonna be blunt here in that Calderon won't come back in a bench role. If the Pistons resign him they have to be commited to him as their starting point guard. I see the Pistons actually giving him a deal like 22 mill for 4 years or something like that. No way Ellis comes here. I'm not interested in Iverson Junior. I like Chandler but I'm not sure dealing Stuckey for him gets it done. I'd love to see it happen if we did. I also think Maxiell, Bynum, and Slow Porn are all gone. I also don't see Joe D maxing Iggy. He's never been a 18 PPG plus guy consistantly. If we signed Iggy like we did Gordon, Joe D wouldn't last till the end of the season. Here is what I think next year will look like (incl;uding your trade):

Calderon/Knight
Chandler/Lotto Pick/English
Singler/Jerebko/Middleton
Monroe/Villanueva
Drummond/Kravstov/Second Round Pick

I hardly see any posts on this board of which I think will realistically happen with Joe at GM being that these Pistons rarely make significant trades and Free Agent Acquisitions. I don't expect major changes like people think will or should happen.

I bet they use all that money they have under the cap to bring in a few players instead of going all out on one or two players.

That is actually my preference.

Joe's plan - Re-sign Calderon to a 4 year 35M contract, re-sign Maxiell to a 4yr $24M contract and re-sign Bynum to a 3yr 16M contract. Call it an off-season.

My expectation is we will try to resign Calderon for $7 mil/yr, maybe go after another FA in the 7-8 mil/yr price range (perhaps Tyreke Evans), and then either sit on the remaining 10-15 mil or so and try and get 1 big acquisition via trade in the 10-15 mil/yr price range, or offer it to Josh Smith.

If we come away from the off-season with a starting lineup like this I'd be ecstatic. Without a doubt we'd have the best frontcourt in the league with Dre/Moose/Smith, and an excellent backcourt as well.

I wonder if OKC is looking to sell their TOR pick, Joe might wanna use some cap room lowering their cap burden and acquiring their young guys. They are in the lux tax bracket so everything basically costs them double.

Dream scenario

Sign Iggy and J-Smoove and resign Jose.

Draft either Mac, Olapido, Porter or Bazz

New rotation.....

PG: Kinght (16) / Jose (32)
SG: Iggy (32) / Knight (16)
SF: Smoove (19) / Singler/Rookie (29)
PF: Monroe (29) / Smoove (19)
C: Drummond (35) / Monroe (6) / Kravtsov (7)

Even if that starting 5 doesn't work out it makes sure we have assets to trade.
