Andre Drummond's Max = 5 years $120 million?

Post#1 » by bstein14 » Wed Sep 17, 2014 4:11 am

With an expected huge increase in the salary cap for the 16-17 season, Andre Drummond could be setting himself up for a monster contract if he does indeed find himself worthy of a maximum contract.

Its projected the cap could increase to $80 million, which would put Dre at a starting salary of about $20 million. Obviously, these are the exact numbers but it could be somewhere close to what Dre could potentially earn if the cap does have the expected large increase due to the new big national TV contracts.

16-17: $20 million
17-18: $22 million
18-19: $24 million
19-20: $26 million
20-21: $28 million

So in two summers we get to look forward to the is he or isn't he worth a max contract debate.

You do what you have to do to lock him up. That simple.

Cap is higher so the dollar amount is insignificant. It's the percentage that matters and that stays the same.

The only way this is even a debate is if Dre suffers a cataclysmic, Greg-Oden-like injury … and even then, it's still a debate. Otherwise, pay the young man and be happy about it.

(I'm gonna go outside, turn around three times, and spit for even mentioning the possibility that Dre could get hurt …)

Let's hope that the Pistons are the team that pays the full length of the contract...and that he's not the only player on the team worth a decent deal.

Like it has been said, you do whatever needs to be done to lock Drummond up.

ehh, lets see where Drummond is in 2 years. If he lives up his potential ofcoruse lock him, if he doesn't progress then theres no way he's worth that contract.

There is no debate. Star players don't come to Detroit. You pay Dre whatever you need to. He aint Monroe.

He has to show more than just potential - he needs to blossom(TM) into a dominator to get that kind of money.

I've always operated under the (admittedly weak) rule of thumb that there is only one max/franchise player per team in the entire league. Being a top 5 player at your given position makes you a top 25-30 player overall and brings you into that discussion.

If Drummond is still a one-trick pony two years from now there is no way he's worth that kind of money. He needs to become an elite defender or a dominant scorer before he's worth that kind of cash.

I don't think there will be much to debate and I think it will happen much sooner than that. Won't he be eligible for the extension after this season? Kyrie already signed a max extension and Klay Thompson is looking for one before this season starts.

Even if Dre doesn't become an all-nba center in 2 years, he's still going to be a max player. That's just how NBA economics works.

Offer him that and hope that he takes it.

Hope that Monroe leaving money on the table to get out of Detroit doesn't become a trend.

Whatever the max might be, that's what Drummond will be seeking, and hopefully by then he'll have shown enough to demonstrate that he deserves it.
