theBigLip's First Annual Mock Draft Contest - 2016

Post#1 » by theBigLip » Fri May 20, 2016 5:27 am

Way too much time on my hands

Ok, the draft is June 23rd, about a month away. We can chatter back and forth to agree on the rules, but picks need to be in before the draft starts. Feel free to throw some out now, and update it later. So here is what I'm thinking would be good rules (feel free to give feedback)

1. The range of picks for this is #1 through #18 (I wasn't sure if it should be whole first round or just the lottery. I think up to our pick is a good compromise).

2. EDIT: ALL CORRECT PICKS ARE FIVE POINTS. SEE RULE #3 AS WELL. AND IT IS FOR PICKS 1-18 ONLY.

3. This is a tricky one, but I think it is needed. You still get points if you are close, but just not as many. If you are off by one draft position, you lose 2 points. If you are off two draft positions, you lose 4 points. Anymore than that, you get zero points. Also, these penalties can only drive the pick to zero points, no negatives. Otherwise you would get destroyed in the latter picks.

4. I'll track Chad Ford, NBADraft.net, DraftExpress, and any of us who want to play.

5. The winner gets honor and glory and a lot of money. That's true. Except for the last part :-)

Fun idea, but what is the rationale for the declining point values? The person who correctly guesses which order Ingram and Simmons go in will have a 35 point buffer. To put it another way, the person who switches the order of person 1 & 2 but has everything correct from 12-18 will lose to the person who got Simmons & Ingram in the right order but missed everything else.
At the end of the day, it's not about wins and losses. Teamwork, fair play, and good sportsmanship make champions of us all.

Go arbitrary assortment of athletes! Beat the other arbitrary assortment of athletes or my mood will suffer!

Yeah, I'm not sure an inverted point system is the way to go. The top of a draft is always quite a bit easier to project than the bottom (or to 18 in this case). But for a system with uneven point scoring should the harder picks be worth more points? I just don't think it's a good way to score something like this. The competition on the mock draft board last year used a really convoluted formula for scoring and I don't think that would be a solution either.

My suggestion would be something like 3 points for every player to the correct team with the correct pick, 2 points for every player to the correct team (but at a different pick), and 1 point for every player at the correct pick (but to a different team).

I'll be submitting my entry in a couple weeks regardless. Otherwise I would have hundreds of edits. Any of the mocks theBigLip posted would make me happy though. Baldwin, Sabonis, and Johnson are my top three guys at the moment.

I can flatten out the points so it is the same 1-18. It will certainly make those later picks the key to winning the pool, but it will be more exciting to watch the draft!

Fun idea! I'll want to do a little more research first before I start putting mine together. On a side note, I would lose my mind if Sabonas went 1 pick ahead of us.

I think Pistons go with Brice Johnson. No need for Bembry.

To give this a little bump I will have mine up tomorrow or the day of the draft. It's going to be really hard this year. Even if there's a certain group of prospects expected to go 3-8 and then a somewhat stable group from 9-14ish, most of the guys in those ranges could go to any team. Most drafts there's a certain feeling around some teams in terms of where they're leaning. Not this year though.

Since it doesn't look like they're running a mock draft competition in the draft forum this year I'll have to settle for defending my crown here. 8-)

Thanks for the bump. So get your picks in early. I will try to post real time the results if I get my **** together and get it all in a spreadsheet before draft time :-)

Actually, I'd rather you didn't do it this way. Just post when you are ready. I'm entering everyone's picks into a spreadsheet, so if anyone has "edited" their post, I think it should be disqualified, otherwise, you can get a perfect score with a few edits after the fact :-)

I edited mine a few times - I thought that was allowed up until the draft. So I'm DQ'd already. No worries. Is strange that there is no "edited at - " footer added to posts when edited.
