They probably thought they were building an iconic building like Sydney Opera house; which if as successful and Lacob/Guber had an ownership stake in, could have easily tripled or quadrupled the franchise value. Possibly making $1.5b profit from a sale after less than a decade ownership is a pretty sweet return on investment.

I was posting on this board that they would end up somewhere in the Giants neighborhood. so obvious. that pier location would have been a transportation nightmare.
