BIG FURB wrote:Geez, I thought the kid was fairly solid during preseason. Not amazing or anything but nowhere near as bad as to make me as negative to the idea of him starting as some of you guys. I thought the starters, and perhaps more importantly the bench, looked great during preseason. Good enough for me to give coach kerr's new wrinkle to the lineup the benefit of the doubt

Klay has always had an elite skill. What elite skill does Barnes have? Klay has added something to his game every year. This is year 3 for Barnes. He regressed in his 2nd year. Not sure if he's added much and he'll have to take an even bigger step up because he regressed last year.
turk3d wrote:The only elite skill Klay had when he first came in the league was shooting, and that was very inconsistent. He got more heat on this board I believe than Barnes has but people have short memories. He just did the work and was determined to get better and he has (it seems) come into his own.
Klay @ 24 with 4 years of college ball under his belt in addition to a father that actually played in the NBA vs Barnes (who's now 22) with just one year of college ball under his. Contrast that with Curry who now at 26 had 3 years coming out of college (in addition to a father who played pro ball and was very proficient at it.
Ridiculous the way some of you rate young guys before they've had a chance even to learn the pro game. Barnes is still learning and is willing to learn. Just because he may not have the skills which turn you on, doesn't mean he has NO skills and those skills that he does have (and will learn) won't turn into a solid NBA player whether it be with us or with someone else.
BIG FURB wrote:Who cares what I'm willing to do, kerr's the coach and it looks like he's doing it. And yeah, the kid sucked last year, but he was solid the year before as a starter and the team made it to the 2nd rd of the playoffs. I'm just not as down on a player that young after one rough season as you are, but you're entitled to you're opinion. We'll see how it all works out as the season unfolds

I'd love to see him succeed, but being a solid NBA player is just not good enough to warrant a starting spot on this team. He's not even a solid NBA player yet. I agree he could grow, but this team is built to win now and we don't have time to develop him.
You have yet to name any skill that Barnes has that is even at a "good" level. He's maybe an average shooter, can post up PG's, and plays decent man to man D. Other than that, he's sorely lacking in the handles department, decision making department, and doesn't have a high motor at all. I'd be much more inclined to think he'd grow if he had a hot motor, but he's just so inconsistent, and that leads me to believe he will struggle for a while. At this point, his ceiling is Marvin Williams.
FWIW, I didn't see this type of growth from Klay. But Klay last year had a lot more going for him than Barnes does this year. Barnes was in college for two years, Klay for 3 years: only 1 year difference in college. Klay was way ahead of Barnes a year ago compared to where Barnes is now.
Barnes' ceiling is Marvin Williams. Not exactly a great return for the 7th pick.

I'm ok with Green being a low minute bench player for now
turk3d wrote:Barnes plays just 6 minutes, gets 2 quick fouls (trying to guard Gallinari) gets taken out, Iggy comes in and hits his 1st 2 shots. Now that's what I call depth. What if it were the other way around?
