Is Draymond going to be amongst greatest defenders of All Time?

Post#1 » by Mylie10 » Wed Nov 25, 2015 4:09 am

As for defensive versatility, hardly anyone in the league right now can match Draymond in a game in game out pace.

But as time goes by will he be considered amongst the greatest defenders to ever play?

Short answer.

If we win multiple championships, yes. If not, no.

The playoffs is where history is made, and last year he was gobbled up by Anthony Davis and Ryan Anderson in the first round. He had a few moments after that, but he was never able to take on a star player and shut/slow him down.

There is a decent chance he will guard Derrick Favors, LeMarcus Aldridge, Blake Griffin, Anthony Davis, Dirk Nowitzki, and/or Kevin Love in the playoffs. That's where he will have to leave his mark.

Dray.....might get less props were GSW just "above average". Now? GSW is the Best of the bunch and Dray's game is a HUGE part.
I think being so " all round" gives him bonus points vs the Tony Allen specialist type. Dray can D you.. get the rebound, lead the break and set up a score. Dray can D your ace at midrange or your big in the paint.. then... steal the ball from your ballhandler.
He's like a wolverine in a phone booth. Not that big.. but scary as hell. The combo of constant intensity, high awareness.. sneaky quicks and length, makes him IMPACT... always. with GSW's success... Dray is no longer a secret. GSW has become the NBA version of America's Team, and Dray is the ultimate overachiever. A rd 2 tweener.....I expect he's on this year's All Stars.

I don't think so because a lot of these is media and perception driven. People like to see one-on-one lock down defenders, things they can understand. Not that Draymond is not a great one-on-one defender, but people like defending styles of e.g. Leonard. Defenders in the mold of Leonard and Butler also automatically draw the opponent's best pg/sg/sf, while Draymond doesn't get that designation.

Draymond will do everything else and make the same impact as other great defenders to make us the best defending team, but his style will never earn him the title of one of the greatest defenders of all time.

The only chance he gets that title is longevity e.g. Duncan. If he plays 10-15 or even more seasons with us, and we stay a top 3-5 defending team throughout his tenure, with guys like Iguodala and Bogut come and go, while Draymond is here throughout.

He might be considered amongst the greatest defenders of All Time when his career is over, but he will be considered amongst the greatest Glue guys ever. His proficiency in all aspects of the game is what sets him apart from the others.

I think it's too early to say that (potential is there though), but he's definitely one of the most unique players I've ever seen. Fascinating to watch. Now that he is a legit and consistent 3 point threat and he's really stepped up his passing game, plus being able to guard all 5 positions, he's a devastating puzzle to solve for opposing players and coaches. I really don't know how you can gameplan for him because he's all over everything, inside out and top to bottom.

Defensively, he reminds me of Dennis Rodman.

Yeah..... ...you get respect when you succeed. Dray is....so "jack of all trades" and so Energy Beasty.....he's gone from a quirky "tweener" to being seen as an odd STAR. While a tall shotblocker is gonna get notice....Dray is EVERYWHERE. That's now getting appreciation.

I don't think he is great so much as serviceable enough in guarding opposing bigs that the mismatch on the other end is overwhelming. If I had to pick just a low post defender I wouldn't pick him, but the guy who is scoring on him on one end of the court has to be able to defend Steph on the perimeter on the other end (via the Steph-Dray pick-and-roll).

I thought about that comparison some as well, and whilst I do think they create the same sort of energetic impact on defense, they are very different players. Dennis used smothering 1 on 1 defense combined with silly length and athletic ability. Draymond is more of a physical guy that is less athletic but uses smarts to get it done. Dennis was also probably the best rebounder pound for pound the game has ever seen.

Rodman cannot defend all 5 positions.

Logo says Draymond is a top ten player. I love me some Draymond - from his first games as a rookie. Who would have thought he would ascend to such heights though? He is so versatile - he is basically a poor man's Magic Johnson.

I think your post is bias.....probably due to watching your teams azz get wiped by the Warriors the last nine games they've met.

You could only wish that Dwight would expend the kind of energy that Draymond does on a nightly basis.

And, if he were yelling at the refs to the extent you say he does he'd lead the league in techs. Do you think refs enjoy g e toting yelled at? They won't cut a dude slack who continually berate them. He does do it, but it's not some conspiracy by the league telling refs to allow Draymond to get away with it. Come on bro.

And Kawhi is a total stud, but I can't see him guarding centers.

The fact that your handle is Hardenownscurry let's me know that you're most likely ten years old.
