Spurs..how do we match up and is there a move ....

Post#1 » by ILOVEIT » Fri Dec 18, 2015 8:05 pm

Looks like the Spurs got stacked to beat the Warriors... Warriors may still be better but.....

How do you guys think we match up? Any one think there is a move out there that could help the Warriors vs. Spurs match up?

At this point I think Warriors main concern would be looking at the Championship as how to beat Spurs and how to beat Cavs (to a lesser extent)

Fine, and no

You can try and upgrade someone on the bench, but why? Upgrading Barbosa to who? Upgrading Speights to who?

Don't forget OKC either at this point. Two more mountains to climb (3 if you consider Cleveland in the East) one a smaller one than the other. As we saw this last game, if both Klay and Steph are on, we can beat anyone. I think Dray will matchup well with Aldridge. Question is: can Barnes and Iggy handle Kahwi? Bogut does well against Dun can when healthy and Ezeli will help as well. Our advantage will be the 3 ball even though SAS can hit them as well, just not as well imo. Coaching will also be a factor. Kerr will have to be at his best. Looking forward to that matchup.

We match up just fine with the Spurs.

They're a great team, we're a better team. Let them worry about matching up.

On their end: can LMA step out on Dray? If Danny Green takes Steph, Klay will post and shoot over Parker all day. If you put Kawhi on Curry, that leaves Danny Green guarding Harrison Barnes. etc, etc

Curry/Klay/Iggy/Barnes/Green vs. Parker/Green/Ginobili/Kawhi/LMA is going to be godly to watch, tho.

Nope. He doesn't have the footspeed. Draymond will go around him at will. And both he and Duncan will struggle if they step out on the pick-and-roll with Curry.

Historically the Spurs have put Danny Green on Curry, Kawhi on Klay, and hoped that Barnes didn't abuse Parker. Except recently Barnes has abused Parker, and there's no reason to believe that with Barnes somewhat improvement this year and Parker's decline, it won't happen again. More likely, Popovich goes with Mills as much as Parker, but Barnes has a similar size advantage there.

True. That could be amazing.

Lots of pundits cite that the Warriors won't be able to deal with Aldridge and Duncan's size..... I doubt that's going to be the case, but I know that in the relatively few minutes that those guys will be on the court together, neither one of them can deal with the pick-and-roll and Draymond's quickness, so to me we actually have the advantage when they're on the court (as long as we have our top guys on the court to exploit their weakness.....)

The idea of the Warriors unable to deal with size is stupid. Green and Bogut are All-NBA defenders who historically don't struggle with size, and Ezeli holds his own and more most of the time. I'm very comfortable rolling Green on LMA and tempt him into shooting Portland like inefficiency, and Bogut/Ezeli on Duncan is a good matchup for us as well.

Spurs have a ton of options in regards to matching up with Golden State. Not gonna be as simple as these posts make it seem. You have guys like Kawhi that can guard multiple positions, multiple guys that can run point with size so that Green can spend time on Currry etc...this Spurs team def has options and it will be a coaching battle

One other thing worth pointing out is that the Spurs will not be able to exploit Steph on defense as Poop has done in the past. Not only has he improved tremendously, but our rotational defense his also improved significantly and Steph is no longer a liability. And we no longer have DLee for them to abuse any more.Although right now the Spurs D is #1, I think that we can match them there and I also think that our offense is substantially more potent.

The Spurs not only make you shoot a low % from 3, they also force you off the 3pt line.

They are #1 in opponent % field goal attempts that are 3pt = 23.4% of opponent fga are 3pt. They also is #1 in opponent 3p% = 30.4%

We are #2 at 23.8% and #4 at 31.6% respectively.

The modern defense is to discourage opponents from taking a 3 from the get-go, and of course defend the line well so they hit them at a low % when they take one. Then if you have a good interior defense to lower the % of the close-to-rim stuff, you have an elite defense.

The Spurs will be one tough cookie because they are the best at taking away what we do best. It will be fun to see if they can do it against us or not.

I'm more concerned about bench units. Diaw mills and Manu have all been really good this year. Our bench guys haven't been great and those 10mins or so can really cost you.

In the PO's our bench will be: Iggy, Livingston, Ezeli, and *maybe* Barbosa for spot scoring. I like that bench.

watching their game against LAC right now, Duncan and LMA look like a couple of sloths out there.

I like how we match up with them. They have no answer to Draymond.

I don't know that anybody is saying that it's going to be easy - both teams have great, versatile players. I think they're easily the two best teams in basketball right now, well above the Cavaliers or anybody else. Plus, it's going to be far more entertaining than any game involving the Cavaliers. But there's been a lot said about the Warriors not being able to match up with the Spurs' "Twin Towers", and what is being noted here is that a lot of folks aren't specifically worried about that matchup, and that that line-up for the Spurs is going to struggle with Draymond's ability to step out with speed and ball-handling.

Either way, I just want to see these guys play, and it's too bad we have to wait as long as we do to see it.

They look for mismatches on postups but if they're on the wrong end of a mismatch, Duncan and Aldridge was coming over to double, so Warriors need to get the ball to Bogut and Ezeli.

And Parker is shooting lights out from 3, as is Leonard.

But coming into today's games, the Spurs have played an easier schedule than the Warriors.

I think the biggest advantage we may have over them is youth which is why benches will be so important. At full strength, I'd say we have the edge. We definitely will need a healthy Bogut.

All this speculation and slight (I don't want to be TOO unfair, they do have the best defense since the addition of the three point line) Spurs-overhyping-cuz-everyone's-tired-of-talking-about-how-great-the-Warriors-are aside, the real key matchup I'm looking forward to is the coaching one tbh.

I've been pointing that out myself as well, but apparently the ease of schedule hasn't been as big of a gulf between them as I assumed? Apparently both teams have had fairly easy schedules compared to the rest of the league so far?

The Spurs' schedule has not been much easier than Golden State's.

Plus, this is the Spurs we are talking about. Not some unknown team. We know what SA is capable of.

The Spurs have played the 2nd easiest sked this far, the Warriors the 5th easiest. So no advantage gained by either of them there.

I think the Spurs and Warriors are pretty close with the edge going to the Dubs. It'll come down to execution in the half court. Our defense had slipped in the back end of the road trip and in the first 3 or so quarters (didn't watch but giving up 34 and 36 in the first two Q's is unacceptable) of the @home Bucks game.

IMO, the biggest test is the Spurs in the playoffs. Then the Thunder and then Cavs if they can get healthy and on a roll come playoff time I may be more concerned with them.

Curry has routinely torched Portland because Aldridge is too slow to step out. The way the Spurs are playing defense is that they're willing to give up jumpers and hoping that chasing over the screen and forcing them to either Duncan or Aldridge will deter the shot. They can't do that to the Warriors otherwise Curry is going to have a field day. Can't wait to see how Duncan or Aldridge aren't laying back waiting for someone to come to them but rather have to jump out on Curry. Their defense is great we just happen to have the one guy who beats that defense.
