Interesting pick as others have said.

On the plus side, it was rumored that good evaluating teams were looking at him in the same area.

But - it appears they were looking at him as an outside linebacker in the 3-4.

I've fought the battle in basketball and football for years, that position isn't as important as the player. I lost that battle, I was wrong. For super great players, it may not matter. In a league where about half the first rounders will bust, I think you need a position, and need to not play out of position.

However, as others mentioned, the Bears do even drop the DE's into coverage, like an OL in a 3-4 would be, but that's fairly limited, but still it happens.

So, don't know, wish him luck.

I'll be honest I did want the Bears to draft a defensive lineman, so I'm happy in that regard.

Oh - can we stop comparing him to Pro Bowl and Hall of Famers? That's a little bit lofty, or are we just doing the, he 's white so let's name the first white guys that come to mind? That's awful.

McClellin isn't exactly helping your cause in today's press conference. When asked to compare himself to current NFL players he picked Mike Vrabel, Brooks Reid, and Jared Allen. White guys the lot of 'em.

Lots of comparisons to only white guys: Matthews, Vrabel, Armstrong. Obviously white guys are viewed as less athletic. But, McClellin's measurables are pretty impressive. LINK

I'm still up in the air about this. Problem with Shea is that he doesn't really stick out in any particular area.

The bad:

(I'll say it) - He's white, so it's automatically assumed that he's slow/not as good.

- When you compare him to other white athletes (Urlacher, Clay Matthews for example), his combine numbers don't reflect the freakish athleticism that those guys possess. So I'm not expecting this guy to overpower or outrun anyone.

Stuff like this is killing me. It's one of things it makes me sick about this country. Of all the athletes to compare this guy to that have been drafted by the Bears and every other team it's unbelievable how members of the press can only refer to white athletes to show what this guy can do.

It's the Larry Bird rule .

Guaranteed way to sound smart. Make a player comparison of two athletes with different skin color. People will just assume you know what you're talking about.

You guys will end up loving this guy. The Patriots and Packers wanted this guy. He'll be a slightly better version of Clay Matthews.

FWIW the CTL crew hates the pick.
Jim Miller very... meh, and says hes not Clay Mathews. I believe this could all certainly work out, but I'm not comfortable with the first round pick (or the third) this year. We shall see.

It's a losing battle.

And hopefully I'm just setting my expectations too low, but these comparisons to all-pros, well would be nice. At this point he needs to prove he is a quality defensive line rotation guy.
