Browns sign WR Donte Stallworth

Post#1 » by rjgraca » Sun Mar 2, 2008 3:39 am

Kind of an interesting signing and another gamble, but this move makes the Browns offense that much more potent for defenses to stop next season. IMO, he will be a good complement to Edwards.

BROWNS BAG STALLWORTH by Michael David Smith

Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that the Cleveland Browns have signed free-agent wide receiver Donte' Stallworth.

Although terms of the deal have not been reported, Stallworth was said to be seeking a deal that would pay about $5 million a year, with about $10 million in guaranteed money. Stallworth became an unrestricted free agent when he was released by the New England Patriots just before a hefty roster bonus came due.

Stalloworth is a six-year veteran who had a solid season being the No. 3 for Tom Brady and the prolific Patriots air attack. There had been some question about his durability but Stallworth stayed healthy in 2008 and was an effective receiver opposite the often doubled teamed Randy Moss. Stallworth is an excellent athlete with decent size who can stretch deep zones with deceptive speed to get on top of defenders quickly. He has explosive quickness and burst off the line of scrimmage that keeps defenders off balance. Stallworth has been inconsistent to make the tough catch and appears to lose focus and concentration in traffic as he prefers to stay on the perimeter. He has the ability to extend and make impressive receptions away from his body but also drops some easy balls too often. He has the ability to be an outstanding route runner but tends to get lazy with the little nuances of the position. Stallworth has become a more consistent blocker with his effort and toughness and appeared to have fit nicely with the Patriots offense but is likely to be with his fourth club in as many seasons. Hes returned kicks in the past but hasnt been used in this area in the past couple of seasons.

------

The Browns' reported agreement with free-agent receiver Donte' Stallworth suggests the team remains serious about surrounding its young quarterbacks with ample weapons. Stallworth averaged 15.2 yards per reception last season, his first with New England. He has averaged 15.1 yards per reception for his career. That number speaks more to his value than total receptions.

The Browns already have an established No. 1 wide receiver in Braylon Edwards. Tight end Kellen Winslow is often the first option. Joe Jurevicius is a tough matchup. Stallworth adds to the pile, as coaches sometimes say. This Cleveland offense should remain difficult to stop. They've armed Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn with plenty of targets.

I can't believe how under-rated Donte is!!!

He was the main reason that Moss was open so much. The Patriots would send him streaking down the sideline, and force defenses into one-on-one coverage of Moss (or double with an LB).

Donte is an extremely fast player and will open-up the Browns' offense even more.

Cleveland got a complete steal with this signing!!!!!!!!

Say good-bye to Tim Carter.

IMO, Donte got the bad raps in the past because everyone was looking for him to be the number one receiver when he's actually a solid number two who fits perfectly with the Browns.

Real shame about what happened. At least the Browns will get relief from his salary.
