The OT Thread

Postby moofs on Fri Jul 15, 2011 11:00 am

Because there IS no topic.

I'm feeling a bit verklempt, talk amongst yourselves.
Here's a topic: Obama has simultaneously increased the federal budget by over 2 trillion per year with Obamacare while demanding Congress to cut 4 trillion over 12 years, and acting like he apparently hasn't still increased the budget deficit by 1.6 trillion per year, which is still 300 bn over his initial estimates of increasing it by 1.4 trillion per year.

Given that trillion is a really freaking big number, which of the top three Sheens had the best acting career? Discuss.

I don't know about all of that, but the city of Houston could feasibly cover over 900 square miles by the time the Grand Parkway loop is completed, if they choose to annex many of those unincorporated areas.

We're over 600 square miles now.

Which would make us bigger than 21% of the world's countries, and possessing the world's 27th biggest economy.

Welcome to the "Nation of Houston" anyone?

(Oh wait, we're broke now, aren't we?)

(Too bad we're a swamp - when not in draught, anyway)

(Also, tits.)

Our Government has just bought in a "Carbon Tax" I swear we are the most taxed nation on the face of this Earth.

At least we have Medicare. That's a plus. And none of our States are "Bankrupt."

They slap us with another tax, and then say, "Oh by the way, we are increasing Foreign Aid!"

I think you're less bankrupt than we are, but from what I've read, you aren't in the healthiest financial state either. Pretty much every non-developing (I.e. brazil/china/india) natin is in heavy debt right now.

What I wonder is... if everyone is in heavy debt... who are we indebted to? My assumption for a while has been that it's a cartel of big banks, since the bulk of the debt is wrought by national governments. That's just a huge WAG on my part, of course. (I have some unfortunate conspiracy theory leanings, but most countries through history have been brought down by interest and entitlements, so...)

Btw, aussie parliament needs to get wise. Our government, until recently, hadn't raised taxes in quite a while. Raising taxes causes vote loss. Instead, we allow banks to loan 30 dollars for each dollar they take in - effectively giving every bank we have the unadvertised ability to print money - then lower interest rates to 0 - encouraging people to take out stupid loans because theyre cheap in the short term - once enough money is paid back into the system, our national wealth has been lowered 10%+ as an excise payment, and none of us plebs are the wiser, because nothing is disclosed.

That part is neat too. Even if you waste your life away watching cspan to avoid network spin, you still aren't much better for it because all the important stuff is decided in committee - which isn't broadcast. :-)

Do the random talking news ads that have started showing up all over the interwebs remind anyone else of when everyone on the internet had low quality midis embedded in all their geocities pages?

^That's actually not that bad of an idea.

On another OT note, my house was broken into Friday morning.

Today, Glenn Beck weighed in on the right-wing terrorist from Norway. (Because we were all dying to know how Glenn would react, right?)

He equated the 80+ children murdered in that camp to "Hitler Youth". He did it directly and without equivocation.

Too bad I'm drunk. If I could only find my keys and drive to Dallas.....
