Mutumbo to the Hall of Fame

Post#1 » by Mr. E » Wed Apr 8, 2015 3:55 pm

Congrats to Dikembe Mutumbo for being elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame!

When it came to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, there was just no rejecting Dikembe Mutombo. The enigmatic shot-blocker heads the 11-member Class of 2015, which was announced Monday.

Mutombo, who played 18 NBA seasons and was an eight-time All-Star selection and four-time NBA defensive player of the year, will be enshrined along with Spencer Haywood, Celtics star Jo Jo White, former WNBA star Lisa Leslie, coach John Calipari and longtime NBA referee Dick Bavetta.

Former Celtics coach Tom Heinsohn, former coach George Raveling, ex-Kentucky and ABA star Louie Dampier, Australian player and coach Lindsay Gaze and John Isaacs, an ex-player who will be inducted posthumously, were previously announced during NBA All-Star Weekend.

Can't wait to see him wagging his finger up there on stage!

DEKE. I know he likely does not go in as a Rocket so I wonder what team he dawns.

Since they were teammates in college, who do you think had the better NBA career: Mutombo or Alonzo Mourning? (not taking into account championship rings). Dunno if either one is Top 10 centers of all time, probably top 15 though.
Harden is still a work-in-progress. He can score, but he can't help his teammate that much - Yao Ming

I don't think refs should get in.

Congrats to Mr. Mutombo.

Deke is ABSOLUTELY top 10.
He's better than Mourning was, but Mourning wasn't the same after his injury (he was better regardless). Both of them still get underrated.

Great player, and an even greater human being.

It was awesome watching him in a Rockets uniform during his time here, and it really sucked ass to see him get hurt in 2009(which of course was followed by Yao getting hurt as well, which brought the level of ass-suckitude to 11).

Well deserved, old man!
We watched the tragedy unfold. We did as we were told, we bought and sold. It was the greatest show on Earth...but then it was over.

in no particular order
1. Hakeem
2. Wilt
3. Kareem
4. Russell
5. Shaq
6. Robinson
7. M. Malone
8. Ewing
9. W. Reed (1 League MVP, 2 Finals MVP just like Dream)
10. Unseld

others: Thurmond, Mikan, Parish, McAdoo, Cowens, Lanier, Yao (Ok not really)

Deke and Zo were awesome, but not better than Ewing, Reed, Unseld, Robinson.
Harden is still a work-in-progress. He can score, but he can't help his teammate that much - Yao Ming

I'd happily replace either Ewing or Unseld with Deke.

How did I not see this sooner, have I been that busy??

Mutombo and Ewing both played almost the same number of games (1196 vs 1183) but Ewing scored nearly 13,000 more points than Deke while only being behind in rebounds by 700 and behind in blocks by 400.

They didn't track blocks in the first 5 seasons of Unseld's career but he probably didn't have a lot since he was short but he was the best passing center of all time and had 1400 more rebounds than Deke in about 100 less games.

He's probably in the group with Robinson, Ewing, Unseld, Zo, Mutombo, Reed

Marc Gasol might deserve discussion by the time he's done as well.

Being late here...

Congrats sir!! He is one my favourite Rockets back in '00s. I missed him as much as Yao.

I wouldn't take Dwight or Gasol over any of those guys.

Dwight is better than Zo imo and both Robinson and Ewing are overrated. Dwight would dominate Unseld and Reed.

Marc has the opportunity to become an All Time great and I'd take him over any of those guys sans (maybe) Mutombo.

But to each their own, especially at the center position.

So? Doesn't mean Marc and/or Dwight aren't better.

I'd agree Ewing was overrated, and Zo was always really really good, but clearly a cut below (even at the time), but Robinson? (don't cite 95 playoffs)

We never really got to see him in his prime; but had Arvydas Sabonis played his entire career in the NBA I believe that he'd be in this discussion.
