For the price we got him it always made sense.

2. Would a guy like him have his own insurance policy like Finley where he gets 5-10 million in losses if he can't play anymore?
3. I'm assuming the NFL pays his medical bills for a while/rest of his life?
4. Do we have any word on if its a Collins-type thing where he can live a fairly normal life except is a danger if he plays football?

And, previous to that we lost a very very promising young WR in Terrence Murphy. It's just so unfortunate and, at the same time, it's the nature of a game where you wear heavily padded helmets.

Jeremy Thompson also was forced to retire due to a neck injury.

You could probably add Jolly to this list too.
Franklin is the latest Packer to suffer a serious neck injury, joining safety Nick Collins (herniated disc, 2011), outside linebacker Jeremy Thompson (spinal trauma, 2009), guard Tony Palmer (bone fracture, 2007), wide receiver Terrence Murphy (spinal trauma, 2005), safety Gary Berry (spinal trauma, 2000), tight end Mark Chmura (herniated disc, 1999), wide receiver Sterling Sharpe (disc looseness, 1994), cornerback Roland Mitchell (herniated disc, 1994), linebacker Johnny Holland (herniated disc, 1993), lineman Keith Uecker (ruptured disc, 1989) and cornerback Tim Lewis (spinal trauma, 1986).
Of this group, only Uecker returned to action.
Tight end Jermichael Finley and Johnny Jolly are still looking for a team to medically clear him, while safety Sean Richardson was cleared by the Packers 101/2 months after his fusion of the C5 and C6 vertebrae.
