You're crazy. The Packers aren't in some rebuilding mode, they are a legit contender to make a run at a Super Bowl berth. You don't risk harming a chance at that by trading a very key cog in the offense to get an extra pick in next year's draft, even if Jordy could potentially fetch a first rounder.

After losing a weapon like Finley in the receiving game, the last thing the offense needs is losing it's best wide receiver. Then just imagine if Cobb got hurt at some point this season, Boykins could literally end up being the best receiving option in the lineup with a bunch of rookies filling out the rest of the receiving core.

Thankfully Ted is the GM instead of you and he'd never even consider trading Jordy right now, regardless if he was very leery of paying Nelson that kind of money.

I think the Pack has a little time to work on that. I think they can hash it out during the season, so no rushing into that.

I pay him over Cobb due to durability, size, chemistry, and flexibility to play all over the field.

That being said, I would hope we could get him for like $8 million/yr and it provides us extra wiggle room to make a play at Cobb as well.

Or we do a short term 2 year deal at 8-10 million a year and see what Adams and Abbrederis turn into, and have to figure this out again in 2 years.

10 million a year is a broad statement. A good contract, (for both sides)is all in the details. 5/50 could be structured this way:
7 mil bonus now
5 mil 1st year (guaranteed)
6 mil 2nd (guaranteed)
7 mil 3rd
8 mil 4th
9 mil 5th
roster bonus of $100K per game adds 1.6 mil per year.

18 million guaranteed, 10 mil a year, good cap flexibility, everybody is happy :D

I was worried he'd want a lot more than this.

I'd absolutely pay him at $10 million a year.

4 years $32 mil with $18 mil guaranteed I think is a pretty fair deal for both sides, if he wants anything more than that I'd be reluctant depending on what cap projections are 2 or so years from now. Older WR's make me nervous with declining athleticism (Drivers last season LB's were covering him). Granted Nelson has never relied on his quickness/speed quite like Double D, take that away from him and who knows how good he'll be.

Nelson just turned 29. Driver was 37 in his last season.

He'll be 30 when he's a free agent which is generally the age where WR's start to decline. I wasn't trying to compare Donald Driver and Jordy Nelson, just making a reference to how much declining athleticism can handicap a players game. That's why I did mention how Nelson never has relied on his athleticism like Driver. Also, Driver would be a poor comparison because there's arguably no who takes care of their bodies like Driver did every off season so would it really be crazy to see a drastic drop in efficiency with Nelson at an earlier age than Driver?

I've already said that I'd take Cobb over Jordy. If there is a way to pay them both, pay them both. Otherwise, if I have to choose, I let Jordy walk.

Pay him the money for all the reasons already mentioned.

Make Cobb your top priority after the season when Tramon's contract comes off the books, and just shift it over to Cobb. We can easily keep both.

First inclination was to say sure, pay him. He's worth that much money.

But I let him walk anyway. Thompson can find WR's in his sleep.

Pay both Nelson and Cobb. You can never have enough targets and Jordy's proven that he's a top 10, maybe right outside the top 5 of best WR's in the league. I wouldn't take any WR in the league over him when it comes to his field awareness, route running and sideline ability.

For what it's worth, Nelson seems like a guy with the type of game that will translate and keep him productive into his mid-30's. Where as if this was Cobb being 30 years old and wanting 3-5 more years at $10 million a season, there is no way I'd consider it.

But I'd keep Jordy around, personally. Maybe wait until next offseason to give him his deal though. Perhaps Boykin and Adams show enough that we don't need Jordy.

My only counter to this, is if we wait until after the season the new cap will kick in and remove the value of signing him now. Plus, with the cap increase he (under his agen'ts direction) will then probably want more like $12 million to adjust in accordance.

I just don't see what the holdup is. We even have the blueprint in Marshall and Roddy's recent extensions.

A good problem to have I suppose. Go Pack

Yeah, if we are going to sign him, it has to be now.

I wouldn't sign him. This is a position that TT is great at filling, and the staff is great at teaching.

Yes, TT has been proven to be a genius when it comes to WR, but it's also pretty rare that they have a big contribution year 1. I don't want to get in another Favre situation where we don't provide elite talent and lose out on Rodgers prime years. I think it's OK to give Nelson 10 mil per, but I'd suspect he'd go for less if we up the guaranteed amount. I'm not worried.
