2011 & 2012 was a good LB draft we missed out.

Post#1 » by HKPackFan » Mon Apr 25, 2016 9:15 am

I was looking at some of top LBs in the current NFL and I noticed a bunch of good ones came out of the 2011 and 2012 drafts. I was curious when they were drafted and what did the Packers did in that draft.

Here are the results:

2011
Von Miller 2nd overall
Aldon Smith 7th overall
Ryan Kerrigan 16th overall
GB Pick: Derrick Sherrod 32nd
GB Pick: Randall Cobb 64th (2nd round)
Justin Houston 70th (3rd round)
GB Pick: Alex Green 96th (3rd)
GB Pick: Davon House 131st (4th)
GB Pick: DJ Williams 141st (5th)
Pernell McPhee 165 (5th)
GB Caleb Schlauderaff 179th (6th)
GB Pick: DJ Smith 186 (6th)

Seems all the good LBs were in the top 16 picks, besides Houston who was taken very early in the 3rd. We didn't have much chance at any of these guys. Difficult to complain about the Cobb pick vs Houston. What an awful draft on our part.

2012
Luke Kuechly 9th
GB Pick: Nick Perry 28th
Courtney Upshaw 38th
Bobby Wagner 47th
Mychal Kendricks 46th

GB Pick: traded up Jerel Worthy 51st :banghead:
Zach Brown 52nd
GB Pick: Casey Hayward 62nd (2nd)
GB Pick: Mike Daniels 132 (4th)
GB Pick: Jerrod McMillian 133 (4th) :banghead:
Brandon Marshall 142 (5th)
GB Pick: Terrell Manning 163 (5th)
Danny Trevathan 188 (6th)

In the top 52 were 5 LBs, Bobby Wagner obviously the big stand out that was missed. Sucks we were putzing around with Terrell Manning and Jerrod McMillian with gems like Marshall and Trevathan at the bottom of the draft, not going to blame them for missing those 2 just like almost the entire NFL did. Nick Perry is still teasing us with his part time abilities. Mike Daniels saves this draft much like Cobb did for 2011, but overall there's not much to like about 2012.

I think 2 drafts in a row with only 2 starters to show for is one of the things that hurt this team and left us a little thin at some spots. There is a lot of fail in those 2 drafts. Worthy might be the worst. Trading up to grab him and getting nothing in return while Zach Brown was available. It feels like a triple loss: #1) Using a pick to trade up to 51. #2) Getting nothing for pick 51. #3) Passing on Zach Brown who goes 52.

Not that Zach Brown is the great player ever but I would take his production especially is first 2 years any day over a player who is out of the league 2 years later.

Don't really understand why 2011 was listed, missed on Houston, but clearly not LB rich.

I squandered an asset? Then Hammond taught me well.

Hell, as good as our draft was last year I have a feeling we will do this with 2015 draft year:

Eric Kendricks
Bernardrick McKinney
Denzel Perryman

Between those three, especially Kendricks who was a no brain pick at the time.....we will regret not going ILB or trading up for one of them.

All things being equal, I'd rather have the defensive back.

As nice as it would be to have gotten an ILB in 2015 having Randall was huge for us last year and hes only going to get better...I think he will be a stud..And then getting the kid whos name isn't coming to me in the 2nd was huge...
The big thing is getting those 2 guys in rounds 1 and 2 will set us up for the future nicely having 2 stud cbs

I was shocked when we let both Tramon and Davon go. I thought it was going to be one or the other. I think I even polled about it. Then I saw their contracts and they both had received way too much IMO. It was a huge question mark for me how they were going to replace the depth (although I thougth Casey would take Tramon's place, who is also now gone), so that's 3 CBs with significant snaps gone in 2 offseasons, so it worked out pretty well to have Randall and Rollins.

In other drafts we've had first rounders like Sherrod, Perry, Daton Jones, so then it's easy to complain about the LBs were missed on.

Yet I'm not complaining about Randall and Rollins or like 2014 getting HHCD. Randall was extremely good for a rookie, I think I haven't seen a rookie play outside CB that well since Mckenzie or Craig Newsome. Randall was very solid.
