danielle hunter locked up with a 5 year extension, $72 million with $40m guaranteed

good for him, and some people are surprised considering this coming offseason seems like there could be really big free agent money for good pass rushers. but he seems like he just wanted the deal done - and this is what the vikes like to do (to probably save money)

so kendricks and hunter are done, with diggs and barr left to go - and we most likely can't have both so it will be interesting to see who gets the last spot. ben goessling was on the radio this afternoon and he's thinking barr will get a deal done. i guess the team has a good (and long) relationship with his agent (who also represents kyle rudolph and some others i think) while diggs agent is also leveon bell's and will look to get all the money

that's an angle i hadn't thought of, we'll see

Would have thought Barr and Diggs were both bigger priorities. Hunter has his moments but he also has a tendency to disappear. More solid than great. I guess you can say the same thing about Diggs. Maybe the thinking is there that Cousins can make up for any losses on offense, especially if Diggs does go for max dollars, while the priority is to keep the defense together. Can't argue with that, I suppose.

hunter might have been higher on the priority list because he's a good pass rusher and those are harder to find than a lb or wr?

Definitely, and obviously they want to maintain their defense. You can't argue with that at all. I just didn't think he had a great season, so the size of the contract surprised me a little bit. But like you said, pass rushers are at a premium so the fact that he has 20 sacks over the past two seasons was going to get him paid.

if he has a good year it sounds like this will be a bargain for what he could have gotten next off-season on the open market

and if he has a career ending injury it will destroy us. Or if he has a crappy year it will be a huge overpay.

Speaking of which ...

Hunter's extension shows importance Vikings place on pass rushers

speaking of pass rushing, sounds like barr might be doing more of that - he's been working with the defensive ends

Exactly and that is why players sign for less when given the option to extend because it removes the injury risk from them and places it on the team. You gamble one way by signing early you gamble another way by signing late. The Vikings got him at fair price. No more no less.

i'm guessing barr doesn't get done before the season and he becomes a free agent (or they lock him up after the season but right before free agency). sounds like they are going to put him in some more pass rush situations to maybe give his sack numbers a boost so he can try and get some more money? who knows. also maybe something will happen over the year that results in the team having a little more cap room than anticipated and we can fit him right in

dalvin cook was interviewed on the radio this week, sounds like its all systems go on his health and he is really itching to get back out on the field

If Barr puts up big sack numbers, that will probably put him out of our price range. I remember Barr being billed as a potential big time pass rusher coming out of college, someone who was supposed a be an OLB in a 3-4.

We don't often franchise a player, he could be the one.

i didn't see the game but when the starters were in (very small sample size) things looked pretty encouraging

offensive line depth looks to be a concern
