Jerod Mayo -- Out for rest of season

Post#1 » by Parliament10 » Wed Oct 16, 2013 1:50 am

New England Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo could miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery for a torn pectoral muscle on Tuesday, Yahoo! Sports reported, citing two sources.

Mayo, a team captain, was injured in the fourth quarter of the Patriots' 30-27 victory against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. He was spotted leaving Gillette Stadium with his right arm in a sling.

One of the Patriots' few defenders in the front seven who plays on all downs, the six-year veteran also had the important job of leading the team's defensive huddle, getting the play-call in from the sideline and relaying it to teammates. Mayo is a two-time Pro Bowler and was a 2010 first-team All-Pro selection who has led the Patriots in tackles in each of his first five seasons with the club.

In the Patriots' base 4-3 defense, Mayo has mostly played the weakside, with Brandon Spikes in the middle and Dont'a Hightower on the strongside. Rookie Jamie Collins, the Patriots' top draft choice (52nd overall), is a leading candidate to step for Mayo. Four-year veteran Dane Fletcher, whose primary contributions have come on special teams, is another option.

Meanwhile, Hightower is the top choice to lead the huddle on early downs (he did so Sunday after Mayo left with injury), but because he sometimes doesn't play in sub packages, the Patriots might consider other possibilities for that role.

The Patriots previously lost defensive captain Vince Wilfork to a season-ending torn Achilles on Sept. 29. That injury, coupled with Mayo's, hits at the heart of the team's much-improved defense.

We're losing a lot of players. Hopefully we can find a way to bounce back from this.

This season has BS written all over it. How the hell do you lose Mayo, Wilfork, Hernandez and Gronk for half a season? That's not even counting Talib (who has hip problems, again) and Amendola (let's not even get started on this guy).

The teams already been pulling guys off of the streets for crying out loud.

Yeah this is just the worst. After an abysmal 08,09,10 (in patriots standards) they finally build a team that has potential to win super bowl(s). They get to one in 2011. Close in 2012. Looked like they'd be back up there again, specially with this defense, and then gronk, hernandez, mayo, wilfork.... keeps going.

:sigh:

I know Mayo has graded out quite poorly this season from Pro Football Focus, but if he's gone for the season I still think it's a huge blow for the team. Fletcher and Collins will need to step up; we've seen it happen before with the Patriots when then next man up gets the job done.
