http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets/p ... fire-at-qb

So Friday, they signed their first two free agents, backup QB Drew Stanton and WR Chaz Schilens. Both received one-year contracts, totalling $2 million. Previously, they re-signed PK Nick Folk and LB Bryan Thomas to one-year deals. They spent a little on NT Sione Pouha (three years, $15 million), but they got him at a reasonable price.

All told, the Jets have spent under $19 million in total contracts for five players -- about $81 million less than Mario Williams landed from the Bills. This tells me the hierarchy doesn't think the current roster is as bad as some people are making it out to be.

There's nothing wrong with bringing in inexpensive role players and relying on the draft to fill other needs, but the problem I have is with the quarterback situation. Stanton isn't a viable No. 2. Forget about pushing Mark Sanchez; we knew that wasn't going to happen once they awarded him with the contract extension. No, this was about finding a reliable insurance policy.

The article says the Jets are likely to pick a WR high in the draft...but with the emphasis going back to run, I'd rather see them address O-line issues (Issues named Hunter and Ducasse). With Westerman gone to Miami, I really think the Jets are gonna go LB with their first pick. They also HAVE to get a Safety and probably need two. Pool is out to Dallas. I like Nelson as an option or they need to pick a safety early.

Peyton Manning signs with Broncos. What.

Now they're apparently trying to trade Tebow.

LaRon Landry

One year, 4 million. I like it. We need a safety so it fills a need. He's been working out like a madman over the offseason...

We still need a better coverage safety.

Good move by them...Tebow isn't a long term QB for any team. That said, I really thought San Fran would be the place for Manning...so many weapons.

Very good signing. The defense needs better athletes and more speed. Landry helps in both areas. Only big question mark is the health but for a one year deal, perfect...

Now we only need one athletic centerfielder and we can really run the D to perfection...

Well, looks like we found someone that can run our wildcat offense a few times a game.

JETS ACQUIRE TIM TEBOW. Thoughts?

Post#51 » by atribecalledrch » Wed Mar 21, 2012 6:41 pm

Alot of people think this was idiotic and so did I but its a blessing in disguise. This is going to scare Sanchez into playing even better and better. And if Sanchez doesn't play well, welp he gets that seat and Tebow comes in.

It can scare Sanchez into playing better or he can fold and we'll be stuck running a gimmick offense and praying that our defense can reach a level that hides Tebow's flaws. We gave up a fourth rounder for a player who's only good enough to be our wildcat QB and won't be a long term solution.

I think it is a good move....Tony Sorpano is know for the Wildcat formation, and Tebow is a Wildcat QB...Hopefully he can stand up to playing in NY/NJ

A 4th, 5th, and 7th round pick? Is that a little too much?

SOURCE-ESPN.COM
After word spread rapidly Wednesday that the New York Jets had acquired quarterback Tim Tebow from Denver Broncos for draft picks, the teams have encountered a hang-up in the language in Tebow's contract that could nullify the trade, a Broncos source tells ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

And, in a related development, Tebow now could be dealt to the St. Louis Rams if the deal falls apart, sources said.

Tebow has about $5 million worth of recapture language in his contract, meaning the Jets would have to pay back some money to Denver, and the Jets might be unwilling to do that.

The same money issues in Tebow's contract that the Jets must confront caused complications for Jacksonville trying to complete a trade for Tebow early, sources told Schefter.

The Jets sent two draft picks -- a fourth-rounder and sixth-rounder in 2012 -- to the Denver Broncos in exchange for a seventh-round selection.

Tebow, a former first-round pick, went on the trading block Monday when the Broncos secured free agent Peyton Manning, who signed a five-year, $96 million contract.

We did this last year in the draft and we went after positions we don't have a need for (along with not taking the best player available). A fourth and a sixth round pick for a guy to simply run the Wildcat?

My theory is that the organization doesn't have trust in Sanchez, but he would have asked out if we signed Manning. So once the Broncos got him, Tebow opened up and they traded for him so that if they don't like Sanchez, they can trade him for something and start Tebow. Guess Tanny bought into the hype, not that I necessarily agree but it's what it is.

If they don't trust Sanchez though, then the extension was the dumbest move they could possibly do.

If the do, then the Tebow trade is a stupid publicity stunt.

Either way, shame on management. We have gaping holes to fill and I'd rather have Stanton as the back-up.

See, the thing is, I feel like they do trust Sanchez. I agree with you that part of it was the publicity Tebow could bring to NY, but also to give him a very hard push to get him into playing his ass off. If it pans out and Sanchez starts playing elite, that's awesome. If we have to start Tebow... Uh oh.

I do agree with you though on the extension front and the trade as a whole. Could have filled some other need.
