49ers placed Derek Carrier on injured reserve today and activated Garrett Celek from the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform List.
Asante Cleveland, who I think has long-term 53-man roster potential, was also called up from the practice squad. Chase Thomas was also waived today.

I forgot about Chase Thomas. He was one of my vastly-overrateds at draft time.

Matt Barrows:
Clarification: 49ers say Crabtree injured both knee and ribs. The ribs were the bigger concern.

Hopefully his career won't be in jeopardy.

Re: 49er Injuries
Figured with the season over, it would be a good time to look at total injuries, etc.
Injuries
"Starters":
Glen Dorsey - 16 games lost
Navorro Bowman - 16 games
Tramaine Brock - 13 games
Patrick Willis - 10 games
Anthony Davis - 9 games
Daniel Kilgore- 9 games
Jimmie Ward - 8 games (played over 50% of snaps in pretty much every appearance)
Vance McDonald - 8 games (starter because he started four of eight games vs. Miller's three and Johnson's one, played quite a lot depending on the opponent)
Chris Culliver - 2 games
Mike Iupati - 1 game
Eric Reid - 1 game
Key Role Players/Prime Backups:
Kendall Hunter - 16 games
Ian Williams - 6 games (wrestled with designation as he was the starter in 2013 pre-injury, but could only have one starter at NT)
Stevie Johnson - 3 games
Chris Borland - 2 games
Marcus Martin - 1 game
Suspensions, etc.
"Starters":
Aldon Smith - 9 games
Ray McDonald - 2 games
I'll be interested to see what other folks in the national media come up with, but by my count the Niners lost 93 of 352 possible starts to injury this year, and an additional 11 to suspension/conduct-oriented termination. They also lost 28 games from role players (3rd down back, third WR) and starting-caliber backups who replaced injured players. Not to mention the loads of injuries to lower-tier guys like Carrier, Celek, Cook, etc. Just brutal.
That said, the defense lost 66 of 176 starts, or a remarkable 37.6%. And they still finished top-five in the league. Really underscores how badly the offense underperformed compared to their buddies on the other side of the ball....
