As our roster stands now we have $44M+ in cap space in 2016 and $68M+ for 2017 with the cap rising each year.
Cutting Kaep, Bethea and Pears this off-season increases the cap space in 2016 alone to $59M+.
Maraathe could shag the juice out of free agency. You can talk about getting multiple big time free agents.

Also, forget Wilkerson. For the price difference I will take Mike Daniels.

Finally you're seeing things through 2016's eyes.

We could get Aldon Smith back, definitely getting Anthony Davis back. I wouldn't mind taking a run on Brock Osweiler when he hits the FA market. This is a reload not a rebuild.

Wilkerson!!!! hopefully won't be a killer contract but he'll produce A LOT MORE than we have at DL for sure against the pass

My sports teams are currently experiencing suckiness. Please pardon the mess.

I'd be all for signing him (unless the team could draft Robert Nkemdiche) if the Niners did the smart thing and jettisoned Torrey Smith.

I know they have plenty of cap space, but I want the team to save all they can for when they're actually competitive. That means don't take up big portions of future caps.

If we have a big pile of cash and a completely dysfunctional organization, you're not going to get all the premier FA's signing on. The cap is going up and several teams will have dollars to toss around. Some guys will wisely steer clear of dumpster fires.

Justin Smith is one of the FA signings that worked out really well for the 49ers.

He wasn't a high profile FA though, I don't think, even though he was a top 10 pick IIRC.

I'm wary about these mega contracts in general but especially given to non QBs. JJ Watt is a great player but his team still can't win. Bills and Dolphins also gave big contracts to DL and they may be contending for the playoffs by the end of the year so the jury is out.

He didn't break any records, but he landed something like a 60-million-dollar contract if memory serves. That was a TON of money back then. His contract was pretty huge.

Justin signed 6 years 45 million in 2008 with us. Not sure what the guaranteed was.

Here is the free agent class for 2016.

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/

It would be uncharacteristic for the 49ers to go after big FAs but maybe after this disaster of a season, they'll think about it.

For QBs, assuming they cut Kap, it looks like Bradford will be a UFA and with the season he's having, they may be able to sign him for about half what they'd pay Kap. Not that he should be signed but if a different QB could solve a lot of problems ...

Ostweiler is out there and he's 24 but Broncos probably would not want to let him go. Depending on how this season sorts out, unless they win the SB, Elway is probably going to move on from Manning.

Von Miller and their two starting ILBs are also free agents. Miller and Trevathian are UFAs and Brandon Marshall is an RFA. Miller and Marshall are 26, Trevathian is 25. Ostweiler is 24.

Broncos are at the top or near the top of most defensive categories including rush defense per attempt, pass yards per attempt, points per game.

Broncos according to overthgcap.com have just under $5 million in cap room and will have $17 million in cap room (49ers are projected to have $40 million in cap space). Not bad but Von Miller's cap number this year is 9.7 million. They'll have to give him a pretty big contract to retain him. They could give him a real backend-loaded deal to lower his cap number.

But you have to wonder if they can keep all 3 starters and Ostweiler. Since they're in a championship window, Elway may try to keep them all. Their LT and C are also going to be free agents, which may also affect their ability to retain the 3 LBs and Ostweiler.

Jason Pierre Paul could be an interesting FA this offseason. Could he be a steal for some team who's afraid of the ET hand? Or could he get paid & essentially call it a career?

He's a 4-3 RDE isn't he?

Yes, but he's one of the most athletic 4-3 DEs in the league.

He's actually about the same size as Aldon.

...Speaking of Aldon... Come home buddy! The dude who banged your girlfriend will be gone.

I think the Raiders are going to offer Aldon a contract, from the sounds of it.

As for JPP, he's not had to drop back in coverage, as the 49ers have made Aldon do.

True. And my first thought is that it's not a good fit (especially with one hand trying to set the edge).

Another name that intrigues me is Derek Wolfe. He's a backup for Denver, but he played really well when he was starting.

Lamar Miller could be a sleeper FA too. That OL in Miami has been awful.

Wouldn't mind taking a look at Clyde's boy Muhammad Sanu either. Ladarius Green would be an interesting pickup too. Backing up a great TE.

I think the bomb to Julio Jones and then the dump off to Freeman for an easy TD points to the need for ILBs or LBs who can play in nickel and dime. Not clear Bowman is that player anymore.

Of course pass-rushing OLBs as well.

Totally agree. It should shock nobody that I hope the team trades Bowman. He needs to play MLB in a non-cover-2, 4-3 defense IMO.

Hey Ray, I really want Wilkerson man. He and Arik could form a pretty good duo on the outside. Talk about dominating the edges! Considering the state of our defense I think it would behoove us to sign that guy.
