Re: 2016 NFL Free Agency
Right now we need to go cheap and young. The veterans for the most part should be in mentor roles. Then maybe next offseason we can make a splash for a FA to solidify the team (similar to how we brought in Justin Smith when we still sucked).

Ifo Ekpre-Olomu was released, speculation is that we may go after him due to his connection to Kelly

JOSH NORMAN IS NOW A FREE AGENT.
Panthers rescinded the franchise tag.
Baalke you better make this happen. We have over $52M in cap space. Pull the trigger.

Unfortunately players have to want to play with a team to actually sign with that team. I would be surprised if he wanted to play with Chip and this under .500 team we have

Re: 2016 NFL Free Agency
Didn't consider Norman until now of course,...
Just realized that he's going to be 29 in December. In the history of the NFL, I can only think of one CB whose CB didn't make the team who signed him regret it if the money was huge (and the contract was long term) for a CB that old: Charles Woodson (although Aqib Talib helped Denver win a SB, so he might be #2; however, that was a team who was already competing for a SB).
Players who made their teams regret it: Deion, Clements, Nnamdi, Revis (with Tampa)... Carlos Rodgers was a great short-term signing (1 year), but long term, he wasn't..
Another thing you have to consider is that the Niners won't be any good for at least another year, so essentially, he'd only going to start contributing towards a potential SB run at the age of 30 at the very earliest (and 2017 is an optimistic projection).

You're right he just left a super bowl contending team so he's definitely in it to win.
and despite reports that he loves the Bay Area, let's go off your logic

Darrel Green the ageless wonder? Only played for redskins, but they still had to resign him all those years.

Revis (with New England)?

Or Revis last year with the Jets, who had a pretty good year.

Revis (with New England)?
Revis signed a 1-year deal with New England (and I said the Niners were stupid for not doing that; everyone was writing Revis off, but I called it the signing of the offseason).
Like Talib, Revis was on a team ready to win a SB. But that's not the main difference; the difference is the 1 year. Norman is not going to sign anywhere for 1 or 2 years. He's going to get 5 minimum. He could be a player a team loves the first couple of years but despises the last few.

Sure, no argument here. In the Norman thread I commented on not realizing how old he was until yesterday. It would make me nervous about signing him to a huge contract.

Didn't realize his age either....
Not jumping up and down for him TBH... yes we have the money but are we going to invest that into Norman? If he's on Revis level, sure but are they in the same league?

Re: 2016 NFL Free Agency
If they are, then i think its a closer call to make... but shelling out big money to him at his age... that's where the brake lights go on for me....
I'll be shock that Baalke would invest big bucks into the secondary... unlike him compared to past offseasons....

Re: 2016 NFL Free Agency
I really don't get the concern with shelling out big money. The ONLY thing it effects is less money saved by York. It does not prevent us from keeping any player currently on the roster. With Kaep most likely gone next year you can just replace that amount with Norman. We will still have obscene amounts of cap space into the future. Brooks comes off. Are we suddenly gonna have 8 more guys pulling down $8M per year? No. So there should be zero concern.

Re: 2016 NFL Free Agency
I really don't see a reason to get Norman. He's a great player but he's at the end of his career and we are rebuilding. We have all these young guys like Ward, Johnson, Reaser and Acker that we are trying to develop. Why sign a 29 year old to take their opportunity?
