Vance McDonald - TE - 49ers

49ers GM John Lynch admitted the team was shopping TE Vance McDonald during the draft.

"That’s the reality of new regimes coming in, new schemes," Lynch said. "Nothing ended up happening, so Vance will come back and have an opportunity to compete." It always seemed odd ex-GM Trent Baalke was allowed to give McDonald a five-year, $35-million extension last December when it was clear he was on the way out, and now it looks like the new regime is stuck. It would cost San Francisco a little over $3.5 million against the cap to cut McDonald.

So who's gonna be the 2-down NT? Niners need a big body in the middle for first & 2nd down.

Did Gilbert Brown have any kids?

Earl Mitchell, DJ Jones. I don't think Dial does well in this role. Purcell shouldn't make the squad.

So we have either a few roster spot openings or more than 15 UDFA added.
I counted the need for 9 cuts with the 10 draft picks and 15 UDFA.

Oh yeah. The additions of Barnes and Fusco took a couple. Forgot about that.

Ah. Eric Branch said we are signing 17 UDFA. There you go.

Most disappointed in Purcell as he had been one of my favorite developmental guys on this team but the minute they signed Shanahan it didn't look great for him and the second Shanahan and company hired Saleh it all but sealed his fate IMO.

Hamm never intrigued me until he got the league so that one stings a little bit. Unsure of how he'd have fit in with this offense to be honest so I can't really gripe too much on that but I think if he wants to keep going there could be a spot for him somewhere because I think he can play and hang IMO.

Nobody is happier than me that Skov is F-I-N-A-L-L-Y gone.

Man, it's going to take me a while to get behind these defensive changes from an emotional standpoint.

I never had particularly high expectations for Rogers, but I'm sorry to see him go without ever really having a chance to set foot on the field. The very early practice reports on him were pretty positive, and I was hoping that he could contribute. He has a pretty remarkable story and seems like a good guy, I hope he catches on somewhere else.

So supposedly 49ers were prepared to draft Foster at #3 if the Bears selected Thomas.

Meanwhile there seems to be wide consensus that Trubitsky was a mistake. Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks said when they saw film, they didn't think top 5 pick.

That trade and pick could cost that Bears GM his job if Trubitsky doesn't become at least a decent starter, though for #2 in the draft, you're expecting someone who'd be in the Pro Bowl several times.

And if he turns out to be a stud it'll be the 49ers who look dumb for passing on him. We'll see how it plays out.
