2013-14 Record Predictions/Team Expectations

Post#1 » by mkwest » Fri Sep 13, 2013 6:23 am

Our 2012-13 Predictions

ESPN forecasts us to have a 57-25 record for the 2013-14 season
Kevin Ferrigan of NBA Couchside predicted a 57-25 record based on RAPM (regularized adjusted plus-minus)

My prediction: 58-24
1st in Pacific
2nd in West

In the past 10 seasons, 58 wins (or equivalent in shortened season) would have been good for:
1st place - 3 times
2nd place - 3 times
3rd place - 4 times

My biggest concern is defense. I think how the team performs on the defensive end is what will either make or break the season. Some of our biggest defensive difference-makers in both the interior and on the perimeter are no longer with the team. There's a lot of question marks in the front court. We were rated 8th overall in terms of points allowed per 100 positions last season. The problem is that we were amongst the top 3 or so for the first couple of months and took a dive in the 2nd half of the season. 8th overall is fine if it's consistent throughout the course of a season or if the team is on an upswing in the latter portion of the season entering the playoffs.

How do you all see the Clippers performing this year?

60-22 (2nd in Conference)
1st Pacific (Banner 2)

Concerns:

- Defense: Griffin and Jordan must improve their defense. Behind them, you have weak defenders in Byron Mullens, Antawn Jamison and Ryan Hollins. Small ball a must. And we're going to be seeing rookies Brandon Davies and Reggie Bullock a lot. According to the NBA Offseason Report Card, Bullock has to be their defensive specialist the same way the Spurs utilized Danny Green. Otherwise, the only way the Clippers can improve their defense is by trade (see below).

- Phoenix Suns 2.0?: Due to the fragile front court defense, the Clippers will have to win their games by copying the Phoenix Suns offense: shoot lots of threes, transition scoring, highlight reels galore. The Clippers have Alvin Gentry who can implement Mike D'Antoni's Seven Seconds Offense and make their attacks less predictable from last season. Doc Rivers is the master of cultivating plays out of time outs. Safe to say, the Clippers will be number 1 in offense and a top 5 in offensive efficiency.

- Deadline Deals: In the 2005-06 season, the Clippers were in desperate need of perimeter shooting, so they traded Chris Wilcox for Vladimir Radmonivich. In the 2003-04 season, the Detroit Pistons traded four players for Mike James and Rasheed Wallace, both renowned for their team defense and outside shooting. Both trades were exercised in February. Vlad Rad's shooting helped the Clippers to advance to the second round for the first time in franchise history; Wallace proved to be the missing piece that led the Pistons to their title, not to mention crowning Larry Brown the first coach to ever defeat Phil Jackson in an NBA Finals (Doc Rivers is the second). The only way the Clippers can improve their defense will have to be done by trade: are they forced to sacrifice chemistry for the betterment of the team by giving up either Jamal Crawford, DeAndre Jordan, Willie Green and parts? Can they win with the roster as constructed?

59-23
1st in the pacific
2nd in the west

it still worries me that we dont really have a big man who can bang/play d/rebound to give blake and DJ a break.

i predicted 60 last year.

we got 56...but Chris Paul had a freak knee injury from JJ Redick bumping into his knee.
i should have to factor in team health to answer the question, but I shouldn't have to factor in a freak play like that.

60 wins. for the predictions.

Expectations?
The Finals.
We didn't hire the Doc for no reason. We didn't trade for Redick and Dudley for no reason. You can have a healthy (or unhealthy) respect or fear of SAS, OKC, or MEM...or you can realize that this is a new era of Clipper basketball...a disciplined one...but one full of grit...and I'm not setting my expectations any lower than what we've traded and made moves for...and I'm not conceding the west to any other teams. sorry.

Prediction is at 59 victories.

This season will probably have the most teams with 55+ wins due to the Wiggins sweepstakes (give me Parker, personally.) and I would like to believe that we have a superior roster to the year before. Granted, that fluke 17 game streak played a big part as in why we won 56, but still believe we are at least 3 wins better.

My main concern comes down to any possible turmoil that may or may not end up in the locker room. It was speculated that Billups and Hill played key roles in essentially being mediators between player issues, and everyone versus Vinny. Neither are here, and while Doc is vastly superior to Del Negro, his methods may catch guys like Blake and DeAndre off guard, since they haven't dealt with a real coach and only with "coaches for the players".

Besides that, depth up front will remain a key issue. I think Sacks will complete a swap of Green for Ayon just to add more size, though I would not want to see Green leave. It's either that, or if Bullock shows he is ready, dealing Crawford for a big. Jordan Hill has been posted on the T&T forum, but guys like Pachulia could be a possible option as well.

My expectations are simple. WCF better be the worst case scenario. If we truly go one and done again, I would expect some major changes in the summer. I'd love the finals of course, and that is truly a huge possibility with the West being wide open, and Rivers being a big boost over Vinny.

Prediction: 58 wins.

I'm going with the classic following scenario:
Start the season great simply from excitement.
Become patchy once realizing we haven't gelled fully yet.
Find form after the all star break.

I think our season, while possibly having a similar number of wins, will be completely different to last season. I'm not expecting a 17 game win streak nor am I expecting us to lose to non-playoff teams that we did frequently last season. I'm hoping the second half of the season will show consistency and a gritty defense.

Advantages:
Doc Rivers - strengthen defense and get players committed.
Alvin Gentry - mediocre head coach, but has a high-powered offence perfect for our jump shooting roster.
CP3 - I'm expecting his highest assist average with so many options surrounding him.
Blake - driving to the basket ending with a dunk or an assist.

Concerns:
Injuries - If blake gets injured I see this team falling apart due to our lack of quality bigs.

Although I think 58, for the sake of picking a different win total to everyone above, I say 56-26.

I also don't think Willie Green or Dejuan Summers will be on the roster at the end of the regular season, and we'll pick up free agent big man veteran/ring chaser... Maybe a Jermaine O'Neal or similar.

Jermaine O'neal is on the Warriors, so I don't think that is happening.

I agree with the general consensus that anywhere between 56-60 wins seems quite possible. I'll go with 59-23 and 2nd in the West. Expectations would be to at least get to the WCF.

Biggest worry is the defense like mkwest said, still a lot of questions left unanswered. The team has no proven high quality defensive big man on the roster, so right now it's based on two unproven guys in DJ and Blake and 3 guys who have generally been known as poor defenders for one reason or another in Jamison, Hollins and Mullens.

gotta admit.

my analysis of this is basically ignoring Reggie Bullock.
would be so freakin awesome if he produced anything this year for us....let alone at a high rookie level.

Did anybody's predictions change after watching preseason?

Barring any serious injuries, I like our chances of getting at least 2nd in the west. OKC will be without Westbrook for the first 4-6 weeks of the season. I don't think it will hurt them that much over the course of the season (provided they don't have any other significant injuries to guys named Kevin Durant), but it it would be expected that they would be a little worse off to start the season. We face them twice during that 4-6 week period, so it would be great if we could capitalize.

Defense is still my biggest issue with the present line-up. It all hinges on DJ. I fully expect him to make strides thanks to the glimpses that we got of him in preseason. However, the reserve bigs can't guard a chair.

CP3 looked aggressive and in better conditioning this preseason. I don't expect that night-in and night-out, but it should make a difference that he is getting offensively involved earlier in the game.

If the "big 3" remain healthy and we add another big, I could see us winning up to 60.

I'm going to be conservative like I was last year.

I say we have 50 plus wins and win the division. I'm hoping for an improved record and a deeper playoff run. Hopefully we can win at least 57 to surpass the 56 from last year.

If the players can stay motivated and keep the intensity I don't see why we can't win the west. In the pre-season we have lost games that we should have won simply because it looked like we didn't want it as much as they did.

I'm hoping we can gel quickly and are in the top 3 in the west by the all star break.

LOL I did say at least 57, but I wasn't specific. I'm just glad that we surpassed last year's win total.
