didn't Pierce already expressed he will be playing? since doc gave him that 3 year deal, my guess is he will milk all 3 years of that deal as his retirement fund.

looking at that depth chart tho, I am a bit flabbergasted that Felton signed on with us knowing Doc will favor his own son for the back up PG minutes and no way anyone cuts into Jamal's minutes the way Doc's been handling things around here. good for us, and would be even better if he gets around 20 minutes a night at least.

I don't know about more SFs. I am guessing doc is going to use that spot for the minutes for guys like Jamal and maybe even Blake at times. I am afraid that we will see Felton - Austin - Jamal - Bass - Mo lineup out there for stretches of back up minutes, lollygagging leads away.

pierce has expressed interest in returning but hasn't officially mentioned anything yet. based on dawson being cut i think it means he's staying. i think we're screwed every single second he's on the court but i guess at the very least his 3rd year is not guaranteed (or partially).

i agree in that i don't see raymond felton getting major minutes as our main backup PG. he's not overtaking austin, jamal is not not gonna play big minutes and i think he'll mostly be used like pablo was used. call it doc hating if one wants to but i wouldn't be surprised for that all to happen and for felton to later on say "that's not the role doc told me i was gonna have before the season began." it will take all of 10 minutes for doc to be utterly shocked that felton isn't a good defender and another 38 minutes 81 games for him to be completely dog housed.

I doubt Pierce will be much in the rotation, and I'm pretty sure we're gonna get a lot minutes with Felton/Austin/Crawford together on the floor. Another guy I see falling out of the rotation eventually is Speights. Wes and Luc are gonna play a lot of 4 when they're not with the starters probably.

I'm still not sure that Pierce isn't going to retire.

Until Pierce says something I'm assuming he's on the roster this year. I doubt he will play that much this season. He had a decent start to the season but really fell off during the playoffs. I'm sure he doesn't have much left so he should be sitting on the bench and being a positive influence on the team.

Pierce won't retire, best bet is hoping he wants to retire a Celtic and we deal him for a top 59 protected second.

I'm curious on how the minutes will break down. If we can keep Paul/Blake/DJ to about 33-35 a night during the season, it'd be perfect.

Scared shirtless of seeing Felton-Austin-Jamal-Wes-Speights though.

Also wish we didn't sign Stone and just kept his rights. Let him enjoy the DLeague or go to Spain/Greece/France for a year. Especially after inking Bass and Speights.

i think he signed here to finish his career at home. I don't think he'd want to return to Boston. I think even having him just to sit on the bench as a knowledgeable vet isn't a bad idea. I know I'm in the minorty but I think he could contribute here and there on the court as well

Does Pierce have coaching potential? It is often worth it to have a guy like that on the bench, talking with the younger players.

Pierce isn't an SF nor should he ever be.

I sincerely hope not. PP is one of my all-time favs, but it's time for him to hang it up if Doc is going to play him. I can't stand for that.

Yea, the team just doesn't have much use for Pierce. With Blake an Bass, and even B.Johnson, there's not much logic in playing Pierce at PF. With Luc and Johnson, Pierce would really have to slim down and be able to defend SF's at least adequately to justify playing him at SF. He is the best shooter of the bunch, but he's just so slow laterally these days.

The only way I can see Pierce getting minutes is if he comes into camp slimmer and is able to play SF. He can be used as a SF if he can hold his own on defense. He would also be able to be used as a spacer and he'll also be able to post up on smaller guys when switches happen. The thing is that we just had 68 games of Pierce that did not suggest this was a reality.

consider me skeptical in thinking doc rivers won't play paul pierce at SF because he would be a poor defender. he played him out of trust and familiarity moreso than anything else last year in lieu of better options.

let's not forget that this is the coach that let jamal crawford defend kevin durant and lebron james for long stretches of game time last year. with paul pierce himself he let him try and defend opposing PF's only to let him get completely demolished pretty much every time he was on the court. so to me the argument that because he's an unable defender weighs far less to me than doc's history of putting comfort players onto the court.

http://stats.nba.com/player/#!/1718/tracking/shots/

Pierce Shooting 2015-2016

    Catch and Shoot:
      46.0% eFG% | 30.5% 3PT

    Pull-Ups:
      46.0% eFG | 30.8% 3PT

    Closest defender shot >10 ft:
      2-4 feet Tight - 27.5% 3PT
      4-6 feet Open - 29.0% 3PT
      6+ feet Wide Open - 35.4% 3PT

Some of Pierce's defensive deficiencies could have been survivable if he was capable of being a consistent shooter. Sadly he was not a good shooter either. I believe most of us expected him to shoot ike 45-46% FG / 39-40% 3PT and have a TS% in the 58-60% range.

He was not good in catch and shoot, and he was quite poor at hitting open shots. Contrast that to 2014-2015

Pierce Shooting 2014-2015

    Catch and Shoot:
      59.6% eFG% | 40.5% 3PT

    Pull-Ups:
      39.7% eFG | 6.7% 3PT

    Closest defender shot >10 ft:
      2-4 feet Tight - 32.9% 3PT
      4-6 feet Open - 45.9% 3PT
      6+ feet Wide Open - 36.4% 3PT

The difference in catch and shoot and in his open shot percetage is dramatic

i agree. having some form of passable offense at least wouldn't have been so bad but he was pretty awful for the vast majority of the season.

My problem with him is it seemed like his "role" was to stand on the three point line and shoot it. He's not JJ, he should have been moving more. If he can't do that anymore, then it's time for him to go.

Well I don't know if we should say "he's not JJ he should have been moving more" since JJ moves more than almost any player in the league. 38.6% of Redick's FGA were off screens, and another 18.5% were from hand off's, that's 57.1% of his offense, so already a good majority of his offense is coming from movement . It was actually only 16.6% of Redick's FGA that came from spot up shots.

http://stats.nba.com/league/player/#!/playtype/spot-up/?sort=FGA&dir=1

He's quite far down the list when it comes to spot up shooting. For comparison, 39.5% of Paul Pierce's FGA came from spot up shooting.

So it would be more accurate to say that he should have been more like JJ, though I don't think Pierce can do that, lol. He was used a lot in pick and pop, and he was a trailer on the break, but either way he just had to make a lot more than 36% FG / 31% 3PT no matter what kinds of shots he's taking.

I meant more of a three point shooting specialist, not that he models his game after JJ.
