It's been awhile.

It is the "righteous" path to full blown narcissism. You could write the same story only Kurtz becomes CEO of a multinational.

If I might step in here and maybe help facilitate discussion.

The book is a metaphorical statement about a time in British history in which their society was ripe with jingoism, moral superiority, and yes, racism.
So the book itself is intentionally all those things in order to highlight the moral pitfalls in that way of thinking.

Conrad is questioning the way his people are thinking by using the moral decay of a character in his book as a microcosm of what he sees happening to the society he lives in.

That said, I think your average person from today's society, would probably call the average person from Conrad's society a card-carrying racist... So it might be a little unfair to judge Conrad along those lines... Just as it would be to judge Twain without considering his intent.

Yeah, they were colonizing countries all over the globe and this was from when they said that the sun never set on the British empire. More stark is the way they were plundering land in foreign nations by using the natives as cheap workforce to help them set them back decades.

I already tried this when I read two books from the top vote list and nobody participated. I also don't really care what Phil has to say.

I promise i'll participate this time. Last time I was in school so I didn't have time to read the book.

We can make the date to finish by the end of the month or less time.

After we can pick a different book.

Wondering if anyone wants to revisit this thread and actually making it work. I just got a PDF version of inferno by Dan Brown and would pass it along your way if you want to participate in this.

Let me know guys.

I'll wait for Doorsnob to make fun of you for reading Dan Brown.

I'm always up for resurrecting this. I have kindle with amazon prime so most books are gettable.

That makes 3 assuming Slava is in. Ill wait another day or two? to start. If you need a pdf version pm me your email Dock and I can send it to you. Its only 2.1 mb so it should be sendable.

What do you want the deadline to be to finish it?
