The 6th Pick

Post#1 » by aaron_gray » Sun Mar 30, 2014 7:21 am

Is where the Lakers are currently slated to pick with 10? games left. A quick history:

2012 draft (Anthony Davis 1st): 6th pick = Damian Lillard (All star)
Other notable players from 6-12 range:
Andre Drummond :D :D :D :D :D
Terrence Ross :D :D
Austin Rivers (has come alive of late) :D
Harrison Barnes :D :D :D

2011 draft (Kyrie): 6th pick= Jan Vesley
Other notables:
Kemba Walker :D :D :D
Klay Thompson :D :D
Alec Burks :D
Brandon Knight :D

2010 draft (John Wall): 6th pick= Ekpe Udoh
Other notables:
Paul George (All star): :D :D :D :D :D
Greg Monroe: :D :D :D :D
Gordon Hayward: :D :D :D
X!

2009 draft (Blake Griffin): 6th pick= Jonny Flynn
Other notables:
Stephen Curry (All-star): :D :D :D :D :D
Demar Derozan (All-star): :D :D :D :D :D
Gerald Henderson: :D :D
Brandon Jennings: :(
Jordan Hill!

2008 draft (Derrick Rose): 6th pick= Danilo Gallinari
Other notables:
Brook Lopez (All-star): :D :D :D :D :D
Eric Gordon: :D :D :D :D

2007 draft (Greg Oden): 6th pick= Yi Jianlian
Other notables:
Just Joakim (All-star): :D :D :D :D :D
Thaddeus Young: :D
Corey Brewer: :D
Spencer Hawes: :D

2006 draft (Andrea Bargani  ) 6th pick= Brandon Roy (All-star)
Other notables:
Rudy Gay: :(
J.J. Bust: :(

Some notes:

All-star to pick ratio: 2/7
3 were bigs, 3 were guards, 1 was a sf

Evaluation:
There is a big chance that the Laker's won't pick sixth (if either they end up in the top 3, or someone below their slate ends up in the top 3). Yes, this exercise can be applied to any pick. Just for the lulz, let's do the 14th pick: John Henson, Marcus Morris, Patrick Patterson, Earl Clark, Anthony Randolph, Al Thornton and Ronnie Brewer. No all-stars, other than maybe John Henson next year. However, every one of them (except for whoever the fluck Ronnie Brewer is) has a role as a rotation player at the minimum. Meanwhile, Brandon Roy, Yi Jianlian, Jonny Flynn are out of the nba, Jan Vesley is about to join them and Gallinari is hurt. So is there something about the 6th pick or is it just me?

In the end we will get top 3 pick.

we'll probably spend our pick on exum regardless of whether it's the #3 or #6 (assuming embiid/parker are gone)

Lets say Exum, Jabari, Wiggins, Embiid, and Randle arent available at 6.. you guys like Marcus Smart? i think he'd be the next best available option. I like Kendall Marshall alot but i think he is better suited as a backup pg.

or you guys can go the big route and look at Noah Vonleh, thats not a bad choice at all either.

^ do not want smart. if he's drafted by us, i can see we'll ship him + assets to minny for k-love (in case they don't want to roll with rubio)

and presumably they will be if we pick at 6 so i think that's what we should be preparing for. perhaps even seven, which is what i'm personally dreading.

i don't love him, but it seems Smart is BPA at 6. seven is a total crap-shoot, IMO.

also think that this is totally conceivable if we end up outside the top 5.

edit: and i do it - if the pick is outside the top 5 - only because we don;t own our pick next year

We need Exum. Looking at our remaining schedule, none of these games seem like we can win especially after that 143 point collapse. I will be surprised we don't get the 4th or 3rd pick.

Either take Smart or trade down. Vonleh is not ready to make an impact right away.

You guys remember it's a lottery right? We don't know where we are picking yet until then.

yes we do, but the team with the worse record doesn't always get the top draft pick. So stop being a Debbie Downer

The NBA should just rig this draft, like it's rumored they did the 2012 one for New Orleans to draft Anthony Davis. Professional basketball NEEDS the Lakers to be a playoff team. The NBA already ruined us by vetoing the CP3 trade, so it's only fair...

I'm only half serious. A part of me feels like the Lakers do NEED to be a playoff team in order to maintain high levels of interest, but another part of me just doesn't feel that damned entitled.
