Beasely Stretech/Buy out...Nash

Post#22 » by LApwnd » Mon Jun 30, 2014 2:42 pm

Anybody know details inregards to Beasely buyout/stretch waive thing with Pho? According to their cap space thread, at the time of his buyout he had 2 years and 12mill owed to him but yet currently he only counts about 770k towards their cap. Reason I'm asking is because I want to know if Beasely scenario is applicable to Nash, can we do with Nash what Pho did with Beas? It would benefit us greatly if we can get Nash stretch and only get his contract to count like $1mill or less off our cap especially considering he's owed less then Beas contract wise.

By waiting until after Sept. 1 to waive Beasley, Phoenix can pay out the $6 million owed to the 24-year-old forward in 2013-14 on the NBA's standard pay schedule and then stretch the remaining $3 million guaranteed on Beasley's deal in 2014-15 over multiple seasons.

So they basically paid him some in the regular time frame and then stretched the remainder of this deal over 3 years.

we can stretch Nash over 3 years at 3 mil against the cap per each of those years, I believe.

but according to their cap situation, only 770k count against the cap.....how do we lower cap hit like that with Nash? and he had 2014-2015 season thats owed to him too at same salary

If the player is waived from September 1 to June 30, then the current season is paid per the normal payment schedule, and any remaining years are stretched over twice the number of years remaining plus one as described above. For example, if the player is waived on December 1 with two seasons remaining on his contract at $10.2 million and $10.5 million, respectively, then the current season (at $10.2 million) is paid normally, and the final season (at $10.5 million) is stretched over three years (one season times two, plus one) and paid in even amounts of $3.5 million per year.

http://valleyofthesuns.com/2013/08/06/p ... -if-waive/

So if we use the stretch on Nash, his salary could be distributed for 2*1-year remaining + 1 year = 3 yrs and again $3.3 mil per season. The difference here with Beasley was that his money was not all guaranteed.

The Suns owe Beasley $9 million in guaranteed money, with this season being fully guaranteed at $6 million and next year partially guaranteed at $3 million (along with $3.25 million more that isn’t guaranteed in 2014-15). So this means the Suns can waive him in August and owe Beasley $1.8 million this year and each of the next four seasons.

Instead, it would be advantageous for the Suns to take on the full $6 million this year, and stretch him next year for $1 million each season in 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17. That would keep $4.2 million more on this year’s books that would not have to be paid in future seasons.

Hey man, now that your question was answered about the Stretch Provision, I just merged it with The Nash Thread.

Cheers.

One way to dump Nash that I have been advocating is trading him to TOR for Salmons who has only a 1M guarantee. With that opportunity now gone, there is another almost as good one with ORL. Jameer Nelson has only a 2M guarantee and doesn't have to be waived until July 15th. The question is what does LAL give ORL to consummate the deal?
