MWP talked about Wes and X on ESPN LA and the Lakers in general for 2 hours. He said how he would tell those two you would do defensive reps every day, watch tape every day, study angles, positioning, and make them compete for the starter role. He seemed very on point with the fact those two have to be the ones to grow up and provide defense for the team as role players.

Knowing defensive principles and being able to teach defensive principles are sometimes two very different things.

Looks like Gary Payton as an assistant coach with the Lakers is almost a done deal, will be GREAT to have him here.

Payton has no experience as a coach, so it'll be interesting to see how quickly he can pick it up.

True and false, if the one teaching the techniques played defense and understood the concepts then it can easily be taught. But if one teaching it wasn't much of a defender to start with than we have your true answer.

I think that theory is now being debunked now with how quickly guys are transitioning from playing to coaching. For being an assistant the transition is almost moot now, and if Kerr and Fisher do well or better than Kidd the theory for being a head coach will go by the wayside also.

AI visiting the Philippines to coach. Think he'll do well as an assistant with the Lakers?

He may only show up in games and skip practices though.

GP never seemed like coaching material to me... I can never understand what he's trying to say half the time, and to me it doesn't look like he does either.
We'll see I guess.

Scott saying the GP thing is "Just a Rumor". Said if he's hiring him, he's not aware of it.

Kind of surprised it's been so quiet about this... Anybody heard anything significant?

I'd like to see Coop as the defensive specialist and Kareem to work with the bigs.

Kareem will work with whatever bigs ask him to. He doesn't need to be an assistant. But yeah, it would be cool to see him on the sidelines in an official Kap-acity.
Worthy too... Randle couldn't learn from a better model than Worthy.

My thing is with former stars is I wonder if they make good assistant coaches. There's so much grunt-work involved in scouting and game-planning, would they be willing to put in the time?

You'd think Worthy would be able to still have a big influence on Randle, but just by stopping by practice as a favor every so often.

Speaking of Worthy, what was his game really like? All the highlights you see from Showtime are mostly layups.

Man I hope Randle gets to work with Worthy, that'd be a match made in heaven. I think they are around the same size 6'9 but I think Randle has a little bit more muscle than Worthy did in his playing days.

Worthy was an all around great player that was fundamentally sound and fairly athletic. He was primarily a face up scoring Forward that could play the 3 or 4 but was probably a little undersized for the 4... And would certainly be today.

He could pass, had decent handles, hit the spot up shot (mostly mid range but could hit 3s too), move without the ball, and play all nba first team defense...

The biggest thing about Worthy though is he had a full separate gear in the post season...

He won finals MVP in '88 with a triple double in game 7.

He never had to but he was capable of playing some point-forward as well.

So I don't expect that kind of versatility and production out of Randle at this point but if he was able to absorb anything from Worthy, it would be a blessing.

But I agree with Crazy... Former stars aren't always perfect fits as coaches, and we're going to need a coaching staff that mimics our talent... Namely, if we're going to be successful, we're going to have to be one of the hardest working teams in sports from the top down.
