Those were cost-cutting days and not something you could use to outright sign a player:

Per Wiretap wrote:Free agent forward Quincy Miller plans to visit the Lakers in Los Angeles later this week for a workout and an opportunity to sign, league sources told RealGM on Tuesday.

Miller is still scheduling the logistics of his workout date, but his visit is expected to take place later in the week.

After his release from the Denver Nuggets before the start of the regular season, Miller has received interest from the Lakers among several other teams, as RealGM reported on Nov. 1. At 6-foot-10, Miller’s skill set and promise to be a rotation player in the NBA intrigue the Lakers’ front office and give him a strong chance to sign, sources said.

The Lakers were granted a disabled player exception this week and have the ability to add one player to their roster.

A second round pick of the Nuggets in 2012, Miller averaged 4.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in 59 games in two seasons for Denver.

Ha pretty much, man. We just gotta be patient and let the chips fall where they may. It'll be a couple of years.

Does the award of the dpe mean that we also effectively remove the injured player from our 15 man roster for the season? So we don't have to waive anyone before we add a player?

That'd be a nice thing to have.

We would need a hardship waiver to carry 16 and that's doubtful. Kelly played and X played. If they hadn't we could have gotten it with 4 guys out, but not now likely. Someone has to be waived to add these dpe guys assuming we get one or two dpes.

I personally could see Sacre moved, maybe for the rights to swap second rounders or something to make room. No way we move price when he's the only PG or Ellington after the situation he's in now and has been playing well. Wes, X, and Kelly can't be dealt this soon anyhow because they signed this summer.

There no one we can really trade for with this sized dpe. If we got Nash, we could go for a guy like Gerald Green

Looks like we'd either have to acquire one of these hardship exemptions or cut a player. But with Ellington out indefinitely...not sure who we can afford to cut.

Lin/Price/Clarkson/Nash
Kobe/Ellington/X
Wes Johnson/Young
Boozer/Kelly/Randle
Hill/Davis/Sacre

Looks like Xavier or Sacre....

Price is needed unless we really wanted to get behind Clarkson at PG. You'd think with 2 guys out for the season and 1 guy out indefinitely we could qualify for as hardship, though.

With how injured we've been over the past few years, it's crazy how a full 15 man roster doesn't seem to be enough.

4 guys have to be out at once which forces you to have 11 active players, which is one below the minimum of active guys you are to have for anytime period over a week. We can't meet that qualification. The second Scott played X for 5 mins here or there and gave Kelly that quarter of run, we were done with that possibility. If it was easy to get a hardship waiver the TMac/Yao rockets and the pacers this year would have did it

Oh, I was under the impression the Pacers have done it:

Misinterpreted that to mean they received one, but it isn't working out so well. I guess it meant it's really difficult to obtain? IDK awkward phrasing from the Pacers blogger.

So what's the deal with Xavier? He's looking like a prime choice to be cut.

Although, cutting Sacre (a necessary 3rd big...legit size/6 fouls) or Price (vet at PG, defense, solid assister) would be a smooth move for the tank.

Especially if they aim to maintain Henry's rights for a cush deal next year (for being loyal while he works his way back).

He's saying being able to sign someone via the Hardship exception is an over-rated experience because they used it on AJ Price...

I don't think we can even afford to cut someone like X since he's getting minutes in the rotation right now. Unless we're sure that Quincy Miller or whoever else we sign is going to be a better player.

They didn't have to use them because there was no need to. We created those TPE's, we had to apply for the DPE. You don't apply for that and not use it.

I wouldn't necessarily agree with you on this since I don't think the Lakers have anything to lose when you apply for it and not use it. Although I would agree that the Lakers are open or at least would want to have an option on using it. Note that when it is granted, a team still has until March to use it. It would be handy to to have it on hand in case a vet who makes a similar amount is suddenly waived by a loaded team. If it can be used to pickup waivers, then we can use it immediately because it would be too late if we just apply at that time. Even we cannot use it on waiver pickups, we can at least already offer that player a deal sarting at the DPE awarded.
