The #2 Pick
Unless Lakers got a plan to get a center, they should have picked Okafor

Well I'm sure they do have a plan. There are a lot of bigs in this FA class -- some damn good ones in fact. Getting a great PG will only help lure them here (along with the money we can throw at them).

Portland didn't pass on tradition and ended up with a stiff (Bowie) instead of Jordan.
And no I'm not saying Russell will be the next MJ but let's give the kid a shot.

It's really hard to imagine the Lakers without a plan.

I see many mixed feelings on this board! Russell is gonna beast it! Lets think positive. Lakers went for instinct! They see something in Russell. Not by what the media tells them to pick. Now lets get a Big in FA.. and lets play!
I have a good feeling about this year. Go Lakers!

Do you guys realize the man only attempted 193 FT's over 30 games ?LApwnd wrote:Yea i was big ok4 backer too but bad ft shooting and poor defense wasn't gona be good for us...hes better off with Noel anyways
That's only an average of about 6 a game, you get better with reps. 6 shots isn't enough. Hell in the NBA he'll get 6 shot in the first 8 minutes of any game.

The Lakers front office is capable enough to understand a basic basketball principle in that without a guard that can get the ball to said big, no big would sign in LA going forward.

Just saw your edit, lol.
But you're right, and i'm going to give him a shot, I haven't like our guards, ever, besides Nick Van Exel. So let's see what happens.

This is another good point. There were all sorts of rumors that the Lakers were the only ones dumb enough to buy Rondo at this point. This seems to be entirely without basis now.

If DR is as good at passing as he was in college we are in for a lot of eye candy on the court. Fun bball to say the least

How patient can we be? Because I feel no big is going to risk coming here while we have a rookie guard.

You take a chance to get someone like Hakeem, O'Neal, Ewing. You can't teach size, you can learn to play better defense. Jordan is a one in a million, y'all think he's the next Jordan? Idk. I'll always care about the Lakers, so I'm riding with them no matter what.
Well I think clearly the big question is how Okafor will learn defense. I can't claim that's impossible by any means.
However, I think it's also important to remember that it's not like it's some mystery that defense is half the game and that as a big you have the chance to excel in that area. This is particularly so for Okafor whose elder brother made it to the NBA as a top prospect precisely for this reason.
So to me for a big to be as bad as Okafor is now, while being as polished as he is on offense, to me that says quite a lot about how he simply is. He knows defense is important...he just doesn't like it. And so my guess is that he only gets really serious about defense if he feels something like a slap to the face when he comes to the pros...which could only come by his offense not being able to carry him any more.
I think in all likelihood, if he's able to volume score well like a Cousins does, he's going to consider that to be "enough". And while that's certainly enough for him to be a high draft pick, it's not enough for him to get drafted ahead of the very best perimeter prospects.

Honestly: We need to be patient enough that we don't try to build everything all in one or two years unless the perfect opportunity arises. Championship teams don't just come, even for the Lakers. Every time you build one of those teams, you've beaten the odds and probably made some very wise choices. Short of acquiring Cousins right now, the core we're speaking of is ultra-young and shouldn't necessarily be expected to even be part of a championship core for a while. Last thing I'd want is to try to short-cut that process and end up with something that can't seriously contend.

Lost for words....Mitch got a lot of explaining to do. This pipe dream of landing these so call FA bigs is asinine. Aldridge isn't coming, Gasol isn't coming, and we damn sure don't need Deandre Jordan. So where is this so called big gonna come from ?
Lakers gonna bleed from this decision for decades...

Maybe Upshaw becomes a Defensive beast for us... or we swing Swaggy/Hill for Roy Hibbert

Let's see what happens before we rush to judge. Even if we got Okafor we wouldn't be attracting first tier FAs. It is what it is, Deep.
